Gravic Labs Awarded Two Key Active/Active Systems Patents

Shadowbase creator Gravic, Inc., is pleased to announce the awarding of two key active/active systems patents to Gravic Labs. The first patent issued on February 13th and carries a long title starting with “Asynchronous Coordinated Commit Replication…,” US Patent No. 7,177,866. This patent extends a patent Gravic Labs won last September (US #7,103,586) to cover alternate methods of providing synchronous replication on high-availability systems. Long-time HP NonStop and Unix system experts, Dr. Bruce Holenstein, Paul J. Holenstein, and Dr. Bill Highleyman, are the inventors.

Gravic Labs’ second new patent issued on March 20th, and is titled “Split Processing System for Providing Increased System Availability,” US Patent No. 7,194,488. The patent extends their method patent on the same topic, also awarded last September (US #7,113,938), to cover the manufacture of systems benefiting from reduced failure modes in a system made up of multiple nodes tied together with a communication network. The inventors for the second patent are the same as listed earlier: Dr. Bill Highleyman, Paul J. Holenstein, and Dr. Bruce Holenstein.

Paul J. Holenstein, Executive Vice President and Director of Gravic Labs, states “Gravic’s portfolio of patents benefits greatly by the addition of these two broad patents. We are grateful to have recognized an important industry need for viable active/active systems and have worked diligently for many years to refine and protect our inventive concepts. The next few years will be very exciting for our company and customers as we roll out new versions of Shadowbase using the patents. We invite vendors to contact us for favorable licensing terms for their product offerings.”

Availability Digest Addresses Cluster Architectures

Cluster technology’s comparison to active/active architectures highlights the Availability Digest’s May issue. Also reviewed is HP’s ServiceGuard cluster manager and Blueprints for High Availability, by Evan Marcus and Hal Stern.

Next, take a look at the active/active NonStop system that allows a major cell phone service provider to support its prepaid phone cards.

The Digest focuses on continuous processing architectures, with particular attention given to active/active technology. The free Digest is published on the second Tuesday of each month. It includes useful article synopses as well as some complimentary articles. The detailed content of others is available by paid subscription. We invite you to visit www.availabilitydigest.com.

Digest editor Bill Highleyman also will be busy at the upcoming HP Technology Forum & Expo, this year to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) in June. Make sure to sit in on Bill’s talks on “Active/Active Versus Clusters” and “Active/Active in Action.” You are encouraged to take part in his panel discussion on “Active/Active Replication for SQL/MX.”

FINFO (Beta) Version 1.4

FINFO is a utility to be used on HP NonStop ™ Systems to display Guardian file information.
The file information can be selected by a number of criteria, it is then sorted on a specified key and displayed in one of a number of formats.
User Totals showing file usage are also displayed at the end of each subvolume, volume and system displays

Ross Systems International have successfully completed the on-site testing of FINFO.

So I am happy to announce that the new release FINFO Version 1.4 is stable, this is a trial version (licensed until 31st December 2007).

The FINFO documentation has been updated and is now a product manual.

During testing it was realized that it would be useful to have an option to display the full, multi-partition, file sizes, rather than just the disk partition file sizes, as is done by FILEINFO and FUP. Thus, an optional command line parameter has been included to perform this (-A). Actual or All and it results in the complete file size being output over all partitions, a useful addition if you want to know how big your files actually are, if this parameter is not included FINFO only displays the partition size of the file held on the disk.

FINF0 Version 1.4 and documentation are all available from Ross Systems International, please email info@rsi-ns.com  for further details.

ETI-NET and Luminex Simplify IBM Mainframe Data Sharing

ETI-NET, Inc. and Luminex Software, Inc. have announced a new virtual tape-based data sharing solution for mainframe data centers. Available now, the combined ETI-NET EZX/BackBox and Luminex Channel Gateway allows data centers to quickly and easily transfer and share data between HP NonStop servers and IBM mainframes. Data sharing is seamless, runs at channel speed and requires no physical tapes or manual intervention. Valuable CPU cycles on each host are recovered by elimination of current TCP/IP-based transfer processes used for such transfers.

ETI-NET software has a long and successful history of managing production-critical file transfers to and from IBM mainframes at NonStop server installations worldwide. These customers will greatly benefit from the higher speeds, improved data transfer automation, and data sharing functionality of the ETI-NET EZX/BackBox and Luminex Channel Gateway combination to meet their daily production needs.

The EZX/BackBox sends and receives data from the HP NonStop server across a number of native SCSI (for S-series) or Fibre Channel (for NS Integrity Series) virtual tape devices, while the Luminex Channel Gateway sends and receives data from the IBM mainframe as native ESCON or FICON attached tape drives. Leveraging the proven BCOM file-transfer management software from ETI-NET on both the NonStop Server and IBM mainframe, the EZX/BackBox and Luminex’s Channel Gateway function transparently for high-capacity, high-bandwidth automated data transfers between the two hosts.

File interchange with IBM applications is a common requirement in the NonStop community. The extension of ETI-NET’s successful EZX/BackBox architecture to include Luminex Channel Gateways creates a native path to these IBM applications without adding system complexity or overhead. Users will appreciate the ability to install this solution without the need to re-engineer their tape job streams on either platform.

The combined solution is available now. To learn more contact ETI-NET by telephone at 1-800-546-9101 or by email at information@etinet.com.

Breaking the Availability Barrier

Gravic Labs Director, Paul J. Holenstein, reports that the second and third volumes in the "Breaking the Availability Barrier" series are now in printing and available for pre-order. Volume 2 is subtitled "Achieving Century Uptimes with Active/Active Systems," and Volume 3 is subtitled "Active/Active Systems in Practice." Volume 1, "Survivable Systems for Enterprise Computing," was published in 2004 by AuthorHouse and is available at Amazon.com.

"We decided to split the second volume of the series into two volumes after the material content approached 1000 pages," Mr. Holenstein writes. "Volume 2 extends the theoretical topics covered in Volume 1 and covers significant issues and technologies related to active/active architectures, including availability calculations, redundant reliable networks, distributed databases, TCO, and node failures. Volume 3 is really a companion to Volume 2 and contains practical examples and case studies for actually building active/active systems based upon the principles covered in Volumes 1 and 2."
