Availability Digest Asks The Question, “Can 10,000 Chickens Replace a Tractor?”

The Availability Digest focuses on Continuous Processing Architectures, with particular attention given to active/active technology. Each issue of the Digest features articles on the following topics: Case Studies, Never Again, Best Practices, Active/Active Topics, Recommended Reading, Product Reviews, and The Geek Corner.

Among the articles in December’s issue is a spotlight on Bank-Verlag’s circa 1980s decision to use a then little-known platform called Tandem as the backbone for one of the first-ever active/active systems. Our Never Again article describes how a system manager’s simple error shut down a two-node active/active system. Martin Fink’s book The Business and Economics of Linux and Open Source is reviewed, and then there are those 10,000 chickens. Clustered technology can offer very high availabilities, but replacing fault-tolerant systems with large banks of commodity hardware often presents unanticipated challenges.

The free Digest is published on the second Tuesday of each month. It includes useful article synopses as well as some complimentary articles. The detailed content of others is available by paid subscription.

Visit www.availabilitydigest.com to get both past and current issues of the Digest (in HTML or in PDF), to sign up for your free monthly copy of the Digest, or to subscribe to the detailed articles.

The Availability Digest is always looking for good article content, especially in the topics of Never Again and Case Studies. For more information, contact Bill Highleyman at editor@availabilitydigest.com.

A very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year from Insider Technologies to all our past, present and future customers.

It has been an exciting year for Insider, where a major new development RTLX Reactor was announced at EBUG 2006, Lisbon for the BASE24 community and also demonstrated at the “ACI Customer Exchange” conference in Las Vegas.

RTLX Reactor

Insider’s new RTLX Reactor product is a whole new extension to the BASE24 engine, containing a uniquely fast method of streaming data off your BASE24 host onto a dedicated Reaction Server, running Microsoft Windows SQL Server.

If you would like to see the RTLX Reactor product in ‘action’, please visit the following link where a ‘flash’ demonstration can be downloaded, along with copies of a Datasheet and White Paper.

Other Insider developments and announcements

In addition to RTLX Reactor and further developments in Business Activity Monitoring (BAM), Windows, Messaging and Open Systems, Insider continues to create new HP NonStop solutions.

Code Scanning Tool

Insider announced the release of a HP NonStop Code Scanning Tool which has been created to alleviate some of the risk and effort when preparing your software for a change in operating system / platform.

Insider’s Code Scanning Tool can scan an entire application for any problems far more quickly than even the most highly trained members of staff, as it will be fast, accurate and operates with no distractions, thereby ensuring that any compliance issues will not be overlooked.

EMS MQ Gateway

EMS MQ Gateway is an off-the-shelf solution which will finally give you full EMS event tokens from all those business-critical MQ events that are suffering from a lack of visibility on the HP NonStop platform.

Our Gateway product enables OSS events to be fully parsed and relayed directly to your own current viewing consoles or mapped to drill-down graphical objects in our Reflex 80:20 product.

Further information can be obtained from the following link.

Marshall Resources - December 2006 / Second User Disk

We continue our series of articles about the Second User Market with an update on the state of Hard Disk availability. This continues to be one of the most dynamic elements within our market as Disk Drives continue to be in high demand.

The market in 2006 remained very tight, with minimal supply of most disk types. 4619 (18GB 10K RPM) disk drives are frequently in supply, but at the present time, even these drives have very limited availability. Both 4636 (36GB 7200 RPM) and 4637 (36GB 10K RPM) disk are currently available in the second user market, with pricing remaining stable. Marshall Resources also just acquired a fair amount of 4672 (72 GB 15K RPM) Hard Disk.

One key factor affecting the supply of Hard Disk is the sensitivity of customer data remaining on these drives. Marshall Resources has always removed customer data during our refurbishing process, but many sellers of disk now require that data be removed prior to hardware leaving their possession. This has, and will drastically affect the availability of disk in the second user market, and we anticipate pricing to increase across the board. For this reason, Marshall Resources plans to introduce a hard disk data deletion solution for customers to use, on-site, sometime in early 2007.

At Marshall Resources, we strive to provide the highest quality service with the highest quality equipment. Our repeat customers are our greatest compliment. Please visit our website at www.marshallresources.com for our company information, and find a sales representative in your area to assist you. We can always be reached at 800-443-0128, or by e-mail. We are looking forward to working with you.
