comForte 21 planning to acquire Escort SQL suite of database modernization products

At the NonStop Advanced Technical Boot Camp, HP announced it will extend the NonStop platform to the industry standard x86 processors which is extremely good news for everyone who loves NonStop. Not to be outdone, Carr Scott Software and comForte announced some exciting news of our own…

comForte 21 is planning to acquire the Escort SQL, Journaling and RANGER products. comForte’s worldwide reach of sales and support, with over 70 NonStop software experts, unlocks the benefits of the Escort suite of products to customers everywhere.

Carr Scott Software will continue to own, maintain and support AutoTMF, AutoSYNC and SDR and our exclusive distribution arrangement with HP for these products remains unchanged.

If this transaction closes as expected on or before 31 December 2013, we will work closely with comForte to bring the Escort suite of products to a whole new set of customers internationally and we will continue to support our existing customers over an extended period, both directly and in conjunction with comForte’s support and sales teams as that transition happens over time.

We are extremely proud of the technical solutions and modernization that the Escort SQL suite of products enables for NonStop customers. The acquisition by comForte provides new opportunities to expand Escort SQL's reach worldwide. HP’s extraordinary re-investment allows customers to confidently invest in modernizing their HP NonStop applications and databases.

Again, while we are excited about the opportunities that this provides for new Escort SQL users, we remain committed as ever to our existing customers and we will work as hard as ever to make sure that you all are very well supported, now and over time, as the products transition to comForte’s capable hands.

Opsol Intergrators' OmniPayments Supports Colombia's Families-in-Action Program

Families-in-Action is an innovative social program designed to improve the living standards of indigent mothers and their families. The Colombian government has embraced Familias en Acción.  It assists mothers by offering semimonthly cash payments in exchange for written, monitored assurances that mothers will attend diet and hygiene classes, will keep their children in school, and will take the children for regular medical checkups. Colombia’s Families-in-Action program is managed by Carvajal, S.A., a major technology consulting and services firm.  Carvajal, in turn, has partnered with Opsol Integrators. Opsol’s HP NonStop OmniPayments financial-transaction switch serves as the link between mothers and Colombia’s national bank, Banco Agrario, for the distribution of cash subsidies.

OmniPayments is built upon HP NonStop servers, whose fault-tolerant architecture is essential for the timely distribution of Families-in-Action funds. To ensure continuous availability even in the presence of a data-center outage, the Carvajal OmniPayments systems are backed up by the Opsol disaster-recovery cloud, located at Opsol’s California-based data center.

A challenge for Carvajal and Opsol was how to provide Colombian mothers living in the country’s remote locations the same access to funds as their counterparts residing in populated regions.  Carvajal resolved this issue by establishing correspondent banks in rural areas. Correspondent banks are local merchants who have been given one or more Banco Agrario POS terminals for use by the mothers. When a mother makes a transaction, OmniPayments routes the transaction to Banco Agrario for authorization. OmniPayments also maintains a database of national IDs (cedulás) and digitized fingerprints for authentication purposes.

Since subsidies are distributed only twice monthly, a significant transaction spike takes place on those days. The OmniPayments financial-transaction switch is designed with sufficient capacity to handle peak loads and to scale as new mothers are added to the program. This is fortunate for Carvajal because serious nonperformance penalties face Families-in-Action technology providers.

The OmniPayments Families-in-Action system went into production on April 4, 2013, and has operated flawlessly ever since. It replaces an older, Unix-based system implemented by the Colombian government at the initiation of the Families-in-Action program. The original system no longer provided all of the functionality required by the government, especially the support for rural correspondent banks.

With successful implementations at many customer sites, OmniPayments is just one member of the Opsol family of solutions for the financial industry. Opsol Integrators specializes in NonStop mission-critical applications and offers customers all the requisite functionality to manage credit/debit-card transactions. Based on SOA architecture, OmniPayments is easily expandable to provide additional functionality when needed.

OmniPayments supplies complete security functions for every financial transaction that it handles, including encryption-at-rest and encryption-in-flight. Available around the clock, OmniPayments will survive any single fault, requires no downtime for maintenance or upgrades, and supports a range of disaster-recovery solutions. Gravic Presents at BITUG BIG SIG & Fr-TUG Meeting

This month, Gravic attended the BITUG BIG SIG in London and the Fr-TUG NonStop Users Meeting in Paris and presented “Fingers Crossed? Matching Your Business Continuity Solution to Your Business Risk.” The presentation covered the causes and consequences of prolonged downtime, and the various business continuity architectures which may be employed to minimize them. If you missed our presentation and would like a copy, or have any questions about how Shadowbase software solutions can assist you in solving your business continuity, data replication, zero downtime migrations, or other real-time data integration needs, please contact us.

The BITUG NonStop BIG SIG event welcomed approximately seven dozen attendees from a variety of backgrounds, including many users, independent consultants, vendors, members of the Connect organization, and HP. The BITUG committee did a great job organizing the event by hosting a preconference training session presented by Rob Lesan of XYPRO and a meet and greet that evening at The Minories. James Brown, Product Manager of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Product Line, gave an interesting keynote presentation on the capabilities of the AWS suite of products. Brown’s use of practical examples and his customer success stories focused on the ease and flexibility of rapid deployment using the AWS suite; they are products definitely worth looking into. Congratulations to Rob Waldron of Barclays PLC who won our Kindle prize!

Following the BITUG event, the Fr-TUG NonStop Users held their annual meeting for approximately three dozen attendees at the HP France offices in Boulogne-Billancourt on the southwest perimeter of Paris. Esther Sanchez, Presales EMEA Manager for HP, presented the HP hardware and software roadmaps and was available for customer and vendor consultations throughout the day, as was Claude Kairouz, Presales Manager for HP France. A key and interesting focus of Sanchez’s presentation was that one of the primary purposes of HP is to “Change the World” through its world-class offering of enterprise-class hardware and software solutions. With the x86 and InfiniBand announcements, we think that it is indeed on the right track.

Several other vendor presentations followed, including a review of the www.connect-community.org website by Connect representatives. Yves Tournier, meeting organizer, ended the day with a practice exercise on the Eclipse and NSDEE product offerings from HP. All in all, the meeting was a terrific success, due to the Fr-TUG board’s effort in organizing and delivering a quality event.

Back In Training – NonStop Technical Bootcamp 2013

XYPRO has just returned from a very exciting few days in San Jose, attending the second annual NonStop Technical Bootcamp.

The event was held at the San Jose Doubletree hotel, as it was last year, although this year the venue was bursting at the seams!  It turns out that, whilst the number of vendors and HP representatives was roughly the same as last year, user attendance was up over 200% from last year – a sure sign that the event is going from strength to strength.

The majority of new user attendees this year came from the Asia-Pacific/Japan region, but there were attendees from Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, UAE, South Africa, Brazil and more.

Musings on NonStop!

December, ‘13

The opinions expressed here are solely
those of the now self-employed author

For many 2013 contained surprises, whereas for others, it merely confirmed steady-as-you-go continuation of what we hoped would transpire. We may not “always get what (we) want,” to paraphrase the popular song, “But if you try, sometimes you just might find, you get what you need”. Continuation of NonStop beyond Itanium has been a concern for some enterprises, but this year we gained reassurance that NonStop will live on for many years to come.

Perhaps the best observation about our need for NonStop continuation came from IR’s
General Manager, Products & Alliances, John Dunne,
in a quote he provided for the post to the NonStop community blog, Real Time View. In the post, HP continues to set goals very high and the NonStop community is enjoying the stretch! Dunne said, “With the architecture moving to a mainstream chipset, as is the case with the x86, NonStop won’t fall off the ‘chipset cliff’”.

No one in the NonStop community cherished the thought of falling off a cliff. However, as good as the news about NonStop support of the Intel x86 architecture has proved to be, it will still take a lot more engagement from us – after all, how can we expect CIOs to know where to look to find what they need if we don’t tell them! How do we prepare them for the embarrassing downside that comes when these CIOs have to acknowledge their shortcomings as their systems simply crash?

In my very first Musings on NonStop for the year, 2013, I wrote of how we need to keep talking about NonStop. Even then, twelve months ago, I wrote of how the dots continue to be connected and NonStop continues to prevail – the dots, of course, being the key disruptive technologies of Mobility, Big Data and Clouds. I also observed that while we need to keep talking, more importantly, we need to ensure that as we talk, our audiences understand that with NonStop these dots can be connected in a very positive way for the enterprise.

We often overlook the importance of telling those around us of what we are doing, a circumstance, I have to admit, I am just as guilty as any other member of the NonStop community. I often look back at conversations, email exchanges, and even phone conversations and wonder whether I could have done more in articulating the value proposition of NonStop. Will I lose credibility hammering away at the positive message of NonStop? It’s something I am always conscious about, however for me the glass is always half full, with a lot more yet to come.

Across the vendor community I am seeing change. Who would have imagined a year ago that we would be reading about vendors as diverse as OmniPayments, NuWave, Infrasoft and comForte all talking about Cloud usage and support out of NonStop? Or that vendors, like Integrated Research, would be openly presenting features that include the availability of a downloadable “app” for use by operations staff? Or who could have foretold just how many vendors – among them WebAction and Attunity – will be providing solutions to first integrate with and then extend the analytics from Big Data? Again these significant dots are being connected.

In an email exchange with Attunity this week, the response to the work they are doing in support of Vertica has seen the focus of Attunity shift to more positively emphasize the work they are doing with Big Data. Similarly, the work just completed by Infrasoft in support of Cloud “bursting” is entering a new phase where more attention is being given to the practical aspects of just what to do with such a technology. All of this is definitely generating the buzz around NonStop that we had hoped for at the start of the year.

Few, I expect, missed the references in blogs by OmniPayments CEO, Yash Kapadia, this past week. “We are fully supportive of Cloud computing and see it’s exploitation as a resource-on-demand,” Yash informed readers of the latest post to Real Time View. “We will see the Cloud increasingly become a repository for data as our clients turn to Clouds for Disaster Recovery, and we anticipate the next phase to be Cloud bursting in support of low value transactions – if the data is already in the Cloud, supporting transactions that simply look-up data, will be an easy next-step to accomplish.”

Just recently, Yash expanded on this observation by saying, “Our intention would be move Disaster Recovery replication to the Cloud first so the takeover is much faster and the availability times increase”. Yash then added, “Active transactions will then be next to head into the Cloud. And of course all of this will always stay anchored and driven out of NonStop.”

Last month in My Musings on NonStop I wrote about the transformation taking place across the NonStop community. This wasn’t just casual small talk on my part – it’s a real tangible pursuit by vendors, and one with visible outcomes, some of what have been referenced above. Transformation has become a key theme, I wrote, simply because we are all participating in change on an unprecedented scale – NonStop support of x86 being just a small part in this transformation.

The headlines that savagely dismember IT organizations who fail to deliver service 24 X 7 will only get worse, and it’s not

to the big service providers either – just look at the fallout from the huge outage experienced recently at RBS. In an FT article, “RBS chief blames lack of investment for IT systems failure”, RBS’s chief executive, Ross McEwan, clearly embarrassed by the news, acknowledged, “Last night’s systems failure was unacceptable.

It’s true that, following complex M&A activities as well as considerable government intervention worldwide, the robustness of many of today’s largest banks is questionable. However, it’s going to take a lot of action on all of our parts to communicate the message of NonStop – it may not be what many CIOs want to hear but it may indeed be just what they need! This is not a case of me losing credibility but rather, jumping wholeheartedly on the transformation bandwagon. But rather, berating those CIOs that are happy in doing nothing at all and leaving complex IT decisions to those inexperienced in such matters.

The coming year, too, will be one where I anticipate even stronger user and vendor support of Regional User Group events worldwide. I anticipated seeing some growth there when, at the beginning of the year, I wrote of how the stand out item for me in 2012 had been the support given to user group meetings and events worldwide. Attending this year’s NonStop Advanced Technical Boot Camp reinforced those early observations – the user community is definitely on its way back following a period where its likelihood of survival looked grim.

And about that, I am now extremely optimistic for the future despite so many CIOs seemingly prepared to fall on their swords – if we are to tell the story and convince our management, RUG meetings represent a step in the right direction and I plan on attending a number of RUG meetings around the world this year. I hope to see many of you as I do, and in this final musings for 2013, I want to close with wishing all of you the very prosperous of New Years!

Third Data Corporation

High Performance Switching and Secure Data Storage

888-301-2431 / sales@thirddata.com

Third Data Corporation provides numerous products which can reside on HP Nonstop and other HP and Non-HP  hardware platforms. In addition we provide custom high performance software design and development for our clients.

FastBuild Switch When building a switch be it ATM-POS, Wire Transfer, EFT, Medical, or any other type of data that needs to get from one place to another, you are usually faced with three choices. Take an existing package and modify your system to match it. Get the vendor to “enhance” their system to meet your needs. Write a new system from scratch. The FastBuild Switch integrates with your existing system, or if you are building from scratch gives you a great start. The switch is also built around the latest HP technology to maximize performance. It integrates several of our other products to maximize cost savings and security in a fault tolerant manner. In a cross platform environment it also runs on other non-Guardian HP supplied platforms.

SecureStore If you are security conscience trying to become compliant (PCI, HIPAA, etc) then you know that you can not leave sensitive data readily viewable. SecureStore does three things for you. The data is encrypted so that you can become compliant. The data is compressed so that your hardware costs are reduced. As part of disaster recovery your data is sent to multiple locations so it will be available when you need it. As a bonus for those having trouble with Guardian 4K limits there is no record size. It supports Big Data with up to 18 Exabytes. It can also integrate with SQL systems (SQL MX/MP, Oracle, Postgres etc).

NxLib NxLib provides a platform and utility libraries for developing a high performance multi-threaded applications on NonStop Guardian. The platform provides threading, queuing and network capabilities. This enables development of an application written single threaded style to perform as multi-threaded.   Extensible command processing and help are supported.  Development time can be cut to a fraction of the time it would normally take.  This results in fast  application development with consistent look and feel across multiple projects.

NxWeb A high performance web server which provides support for NxLib applications.  It also can be used without NxLib.  It provides for secure connections, virtual domains, full http support and interfaces to pathway and IPC communications.

NxFile+ NxFile+ provides compression and encryption to Enscribe structured files.  The files are configured through a GUI interface and the results are provided seamlessly to your applications, typically without any code changes.  In addition this provides for dynamic key changes on the fly so data stored at-rest may have its encryption keys changed as required.  Because the records can be compressed prior to encryption, it’s also possible to have records which significantly exceed the 4k record size limitations.

NxSSL NxSSL is an SSL proxy which may be used to provide SSL encryption and authentication services to TCP/IP connections.  It provides full support for certificates and multiple encryption standards.  It has been carefully tuned to provide the highest performance available for any NonStop SSL connection.

NxUndelete Files accidentally deleted can be a real problem.  Even when a backup is available, it is frequently a significant effort to retrieve it from a backup tape.  NxUndelete implements a recycle bin function on the the HP NonStop system.  Files deleted may be easily recovered using its GUI interface.

Availability Digest Article Says Cryptlocker is Destructive Randomware

Ransomware is a class of malware that locks a computer and demands a ransom from the computer’s owner to unlock it. Most ransomware only freezes a computer, and the computer often can be restored by an antivirus service provider. CryptoLocker is a variant of ransomware and is much more dangerous. Instead of simply freezing a computer, it encrypts all of the files on the computer. Though the computer still runs, it cannot do anything because the files to which it needs access are encrypted with a key that is unavailable to the user. CryptoLocker will only release the files if a ransom of a few hundred dollars is paid within a specified time period. No private or government agency has yet been able to break the encryption. The Availability Digest takes a look at how CryptoLocker works and what – if anything – can be done to prevent you from being infected.  http://bit.ly/IQ2s87

Also in the Digest:

Windows Azure Downed by Single Point of Failure - The Microsoft Azure cloud has a single point of failure, and this component failed in October, 2013. The failure caused a worldwide partial compute outage. While the glitch did not prevent cloud applications from running, it took down certain cloud-management functions for a day and a half. Specifically, new applications could not be placed into service.

Ponemon on Live Threat Analysis - Ponemon Institute conducts empirical studies on critical issues affecting the management and security of sensitive information about people and organizations. Recently, it completed a study on the value of live cyberthreat intelligence for combating cyberattacks. Among its findings – the average cost to large organizations for defending cyberattacks is about USD $10 million per year.

Surviving DNS DDoS Attacks – this product review introduces Secure64’s DNS Authority, a dedicated DNS name server that is designed to be self-protecting.  DDoS attacks are on the rise, and DNS servers are particularly vulnerable.  DNS Authority identifies and blocks attack traffic while continuing to respond to DNS queries from legitimate sources.

The Availability Digest offers one-day and multi-day seminars on High Availability: Concepts and Practices. Seminars are given both onsite and online and are tailored to an organization’s specific needs.  We also offer technical and marketing writing services as well as consulting services for achieving high availability.

Published monthly, the Digest is free and lives at www.availabilitydigest.com.  Please visit our Continuous Availability Forum on LinkedIn.  We’re at 605 members and counting. Our latest thread is “Try Doing This Today!”  Follow us on Twitter @availabilitydig.

A growing number of CSP customers are taking advantage of CSP’s unique real-time monitoring and alerting of Safeguard, BASE24 and EMS events. Additionally, events generated from CSP Passport, CSP’s session and command control product, can also be monitored.

Using Alert-Plus, customers can set rules to look for and then act on events of interest – as they are written to the logs and audit files.

Actions include:

·        Forwarding alarms to a central syslog server – e.g. LogRhythm

·        Generating Emails

·        Displaying messages on a console

·        Execution of TACL macros and other programs

Alert-Plus ensures that you always see the events in real-time, enabling you to respond immediately to any possible threats.

By merging the event streams from Safeguard, BASE24 and EMS and delivering them to a central event management system, Alert-Plus integrates Nonstop monitoring into your enterprise systems administration, providing:

·        Heightened security with real-time alerts for security issues.

·        Improved system productivity from prompt interventions based on alerts.

·        Enhanced staff efficiency by reducing time required to find anomalous events.

Addressing the Changing Payments Landscape

- White Paper by Lusis Payments

Today's payments landscape is changing and financial institutions around the world have never been under so much pressure: regulation is increasing and customers are demanding improved service with ever more emphasis on convenience and simplicity. Legacy systems cannot adapt in a rapid and cost effective manner owing to the inflexibility and complexity of their design.

Extending the life of the legacy solutions exposes financial institutions to loss of market share and creates an inability to compete which will ultimately constrain the commercial operation of the business.  Meanwhile, the impact of faster, easier to use, more flexible technology has aligned with the growth in expectations to change payments as we know them today.

To download the complete white paper visit http://www.lusispayments.com/payments-landscape-changing or contact Brian Miller at Brian.Miller@lusispayments.com for more information.
