Article

In the upcoming ITUG Connection magazine, I have written an article of which the title and theme come from a quote attributed to HP Distinguished Technologist, Wendy Bartlett’s observation that when disasters happen, even the best IT staff seem to lose IQ in the throes of unplanned ‘events’….

It’s clear, when things go wrong, people’s decision making skills become impaired and even the best of our staff are susceptible under stress to make errors that can cause small outages to be worse and major outages to become cataclysmic. Yes, when things go wrong, people get stupider.

So in the context of IT, what can be done to ensure that unexpected situations are resolved both expediently and without making a bad situation worse? The answer is preparation.

Specifically, we believe there are four (4) vitally important areas to concentrate on to minimize IQ loss and stress during disasters.

They are:

1.      Have a well documented plan

2.      Automate as much as possible

3.      Practice as much as possible

4.      Specifically for the NonStop environment, leverage the products that HP and the vendor community have provided to do much of the above

My thoughts on each of the above are explained at some length in the upcoming The Connection article and I have started a LinkedIn conversation thread to hear what you, the real experts, all have to say -

Tributary Announces Enhanced Replication with Latency Management and WAN Optimization on ViTAL 3.0

Tributary Systems, Inc., the provider of end-to-end data protection solutions for HP NonStop environments, announces advanced replication features in addition to data de-duplication with ViTAL® 3.0.  The ViTAL backup virtualization and data protection solution offers HP NonStop customers data backup and remote replication for Disaster Recovery while maintaining the NonStop fundamentals of fault-tolerance, data integrity and scalability.  The ViTAL solution is now able to maximize the performance of the TCP/IP link by using a highly paralleled TCP/IP pipeline to reduce the effects of network latency while Artificial Intelligence monitors and adjusts the network setting to maintain the optimum performance at all times. This feature is designed for linking Storage Area Networks or discrete storage devices over long distances to form a part of a remote replication, backup or data migration strategy.  By using Artificial Intelligence combined with network latency management techniques and scalable architecture, ViTAL provides a highly flexible tool to enhance any Disaster Recovery strategy for SME and Enterprise alike at a fraction of the cost of enterprise de-duplication solutions in the market today.

In addition to its network latency management and WAN optimization features, ViTAL 3.0 also offers built-in tape replication, data compression and AES encryption capabilities to provide a cost effective remote replication and disaster recovery total solution for HP NonStop customers.

As a strategic partner and OEM supplier to HP NED, Tributary Systems tests every release of G, H and J-series OS prior to release to ensure compatibility of ALL Tributary supplied backup storage products and solutions with every new version of HP NonStop OS.  In addition, Tributary supplies HP NED with a full suite of backup storage products which include LTO based tape products, automation products and library management software.

Please contact your HP account manager for detailed information on all tape, automation and library management software solutions available directly from HP NED.

Marshall Resources – helping customers reduce the cost of NonStop Hardware Maintenance

I received a comment from a UK based customer last week that has inspired me to write this piece for Tandemworld.  In summary, our customer was saying that Marshall Resources was well known as a Tandem supplier, but one who just operates in the US and one who only participates in the business of parts sales.  This comment, whilst partly correct, does not actually represent us completely and has encouraged me to   publicize our offerings.  In doing so, I hope to continue the good work regarding Tandem Maintenance that we already undertake – and in the UK too! – by making Tandem customers more aware of what we do and taking advantage of our cost effective services.  Please allow me to explain further about Marshall Resources, and at the same time I will try and provide some helpful information as it relates to the general condition of the NonStop maintenance industry.

Yes indeed, Marshall Resources does maintain the world’s largest inventory of second hand Tandem / HP NonStop Computer hardware.  We have our primary refurbishing, repair, and testing facility in North Carolina, USA.  We also have a facility in Frankfurt, Germany with a large stock of parts and test systems.  We also have storage locations in France, England, and Singapore.  The purpose of these remote facilities is to support our global hardware maintenance business.

Besides a large number of systems in the US, we also have NonStop systems under support in several UK locations, much of Europe, several Eastern European locations, and South East Asia.  We have hired many experienced Tandem engineers to cover these locations, and we have also established several key service provider relationships throughout the world.  All of this enables us to be truly global in our service offering.

Another factor that has helped our service offerings is the availability of retired Tandem CEs.  We provide a wonderful opportunity for experienced Tandem people to continue using their skills, part time, at a very attractive hourly pay rate.  About 90% of our current Field Service Team has an average of 25 years Tandem experience.  With recent hires, we can also boast that about 50% of our team has Integrity and NS-Blade training..  Please call us if you are interesting in employment, or please refer us to any of your Tandem friends who have been ’retired’ by HP.

Currently, the demand for S-Series maintenance is very high.  In 2012, HP is approaching end of life on many S Series components.  Even with some parts and CPUs extending EOL through 2013, all S-Series Users will have systems with some or a lot of components out of HP support sometime next year.   Many customers are not in a position to upgrade these systems to Integrity systems or Blades, so interest in third party support is very high at this time.  Marshall Resources continues to increase its resources and as it does so, this adds to our economies of scale and therefore response times improve and allow for better pricing and levels of service.  This interest in third party solutions has also helped us with an increase in inquiries for NS-Integrity service, which we are also able to offer.  We have already helped many customers make considerable savings in the NonStop hardware maintenance area.  We would be delighted to work with you to demonstrate what saving we can make for you.

At Marshall Resources, we strive to provide the highest quality service with the highest quality equipment.  Our repeat customers are our greatest compliment.

Please visit our website at www.marshallresources.com for our company information, and find a sales representative in your area to assist you.

We can always be reached at +1 800-443-0128, or by e-mail cm@marshallresources.com .  We are looking forward to working with you.

HP and Intel® Nominate Gravic as Finalist for

2011 Mission-Critical Innovation Award

HP and Intel announced that Gravic, Inc.® is a finalist in the 2011 Mission-Critical Innovation Awards. The Awards formally recognize organizations’ successful delivery of implementing database, data warehousing, or line-of-business solutions that take advantage of the dependability and performance of Itanium-based platforms while producing impactful results. An independent panel of judges chosen by the sponsors nominated Gravic’s Shadowbase® product solution for The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) as one of the very best in the Mission-Critical Data category, a category which recognizes ground-breaking work developing solutions for mission-critical computing. The award winners will be announced November 28, 2011 at the Mission-Critical Awards Celebration event, at Hotel Imperial in Vienna, Austria prior to the HP Discover 2011 conference. Please click here for more information on the award.

RBC, the largest ATM/POS network in Canada, selected the Shadowbase product suite from Gravic to provide its data replication and integration solutions. The bank took a major step towards providing improved service to its customers by modernizing its active/backup data center architecture and reengineering it into an active/active network. This improvement resulted in planned outages for system upgrades being reduced from hours to minutes, and recovery from an unplanned outage resulting from a system failure or a data center disaster being reduced by more than 95%, from hours or even days to a few minutes. Please click here to read an executive summary of a case study on the RBC implementation.

Gravic Publishes New Case Study:

Island Bank Finds that Active/Active is Better

This island bank is located on the Pacific Rim Ring of Fire and lost its data center for several hours during an earthquake. The bank initiated its disaster recovery plan, but could not bring its backup systems into operation and suffered a failover fault. The most critical outages were its online banking services and its ATM/POS network, which were further aggravated by the production system losing power and having the IT staff evacuated from the primary data center due to concerns about structural damage. The bank addressed these issues by implementing Shadowbase data replication, moving its architecture in a controlled fashion towards an active/active configuration and continuous availability. Gravic Attends CTUG and ACE Asia-Pacific Conferences

Gravic was pleased to attend and present at the recent CTUG Fall 2011 Conference at the HP offices in the Toronto area in October. As usual this was a great conference, well attended, and very professionally run. The attendees were very positive about the new product introductions and NonStop market status presented by HP as well as spending time reviewing the various software vendor solutions. Rob Lesan’s presentation on how AOL migrated the 40-Sybase-instance AIM application onto the NonStop with no application downtime was particularly interesting. Please contact us if you would like more information on how Rob leveraged Shadowbase technology to make this migration happen. We met many companies interested in migrating from their existing replication infrastructure to Shadowbase solutions, and we look forward to further discussions with all of you. We appreciate the efforts of the folks at CTUG for making this a very worthwhile conference.

Gravic participated in and presented at the ACE Asia-Pacific regional trade show at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Casino in Singapore in October. The event was attended by over 290 ACI BASE24™ customers and delegates and provided the latest updates on the trends facing the global payments industry. The emphasis going forward is certainly on “mobile banking” and how companies can position themselves to manage business in this evolving industry. Many customer testimonials were given from regional front runners in the industry, including Steve Saltwick of HP, who spoke about HP’s continued commitment to the enterprise banking industry, and HP’s position with SQL/MX and the new blade technology to meet customer needs. To understand the significance of this evolving marketplace, simply ask oneself, “If I had to be stranded without either my credit card or my cell phone, which would I choose?” Throughout the conference, ACI illustrated its commitment to new technology and the mobile banking environment. Shadowbase solutions are well-positioned to assist these customers with their business continuity, data integration, and data synchronization needs. Please contact us to discuss how our solutions can satisfy your business challenges in these areas.

Musings on NonStop!

November, ‘11

The opinions expressed here are solely
those of the now self-employed author

Well, the snow keeps on falling here in Boulder, Colorado, and already popular ski resorts at Copper and Keystone opened early. Readers who have been following my blog posts will have seen a couple of pictures already – most recently, as I posted to the blog, Real Time View, I included a snapshot taken of our house during one particularly heavy snowfall.

It may be early, but then again, hearing of ski runs opening definitely tells you that winter has begun and winter activities have officially “kicked-off”. Until we saw the first snow falls it was hard for us to accept another Ice Hockey season was under way, just as it wasn’t easy to accept that the outdoor BBQ season had definitely come to a halt.

Kick-offs of another kind are under way too: HP has been holding their own sales kick-off just as I know of others within our own vendor community. During the many years I was with Insession, and then later at GoldenGate, the annual sales kick-off events were not to be missed. Awards were handed out, achievements celebrated and yes, the next day, everyone started at zero! All the great news just celebrated was now in the past and it was a case of starting over …

I am leaving to a blog posting to Real Time View, and it may already have been published as you read this, what my opinions are of Meg Whitman and her early decisions at the helm of HP (and all pretty good, mind you) but yet, it’s as if she, too, is having a HP kick-off at the very highest levels. No more so than when she reversed the previous decision to sell of the PC business. In the famous words from the second film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, “Meat’s back on the table, boys!”

In a post of November 3, 2011, on the web site of The Motley Fool, The World’s Greatest Investing Community, or so the site proclaims: “HP wants Apple’s secret sauce” the author focused on commentary from HP at the time of the press release announcing the reversal, highlighting that “HP dropped a hint as to its intentions for Apple: "Ultramobile is a notebook category of sub-17 millimeter notebooks. We're very focused on having a suite in that ultramobile space. And you'll see that very soon."

Deeper into that post, the author then notes how HP may be paying particular attention to the very thin line of notebooks, where Apple produces the MacBook Air, observing “because they lack hard drives, high-end Airs pack as much as 256 gigabytes worth flash memory. If rival ultrabooks boast similar numbers, and if they do indeed grow to constitute 25% of the laptop market, this argues in favor of explosive growth for the memory suppliers.

Bottom line? The outrageous success of tablet PCs, and the utlramobile market, and now expectations of growth in ultrabooks, the move to embrace Cloud Computing makes even more sense. And here’s where the NonStop Server platform has a real chance of having an impact. Savvy CIOs will want private clouds serving their enterprise to have all the characteristics of NonStop – yes, they want to scale and to accommodate rapidly changing resource requirement, where provisioning happens immediately (thank heavens for Pathway!) and have the signature availability that only NonStop provides. Readers who caught one of my recent posts to realtime.ir.com “
It’s all in our hands … will know full well how I feel about the inroads ultramobile and ultrabooks will make. Even within the data center.

I am often asked why I pay attention to these marketplaces and what relevance do they have to NonStop. As simply as I can state, the importance to all within the NonStop community is that these are the very client devices that will fuel explosive growth in NonStop Server platform deployments. What we are witnessing is the birth of a generation of touch points that will only be valued by their users when the services they need are available and accessible.

In the “Always On” world, we hear so much about, and where mobility is well understood, being off line for any reason will sour any users experience. And for that reason alone I will continue to stay close to this fast changing world, and perhaps HP will catch some of the special sauce after all!

 Until next month…

Availability Digest Reviews Data Center Monitoring with Open-Source Nagios

Guest author Wolfgang Breidbach is Director, NonStop, at BV Zahlungssysteme, aka BV Payment Systems, which provides continuously available services for card-based payment transactions and electronic banking for German financial institutions.  “Data Center Monitoring with Open-Source Nagios” details BV Payment Systems’  innovative adaptation of an open-source Nagios monitor to keep track of the Unix, Linux, Windows and NonStop servers that comprise the company’s two geographically dispersed data centers.

Also in the November Digest:

Help! My Data Center is Down!  Part 2: Storage Outages examines spectacular storage-system failures that caused companies to lose their data for long periods of time or even forever.

● Our Product Review in October introduced FileSync from TANDsoft, Inc., as a solution for configuration drift, a major cause of failover faults in active/passive systems.  Our August issue highlighted Carr Scott Software’s  AutoSync, another solution for configuration drift.   This month’s Product Review focuses on TANDsoft’s Command Stream Replicator, which automatically replicates DDL structure and other environment changes to target systems – changes and settings normally not replicated because they sit outside the TMF Audit Trail.

● A major step forward in achieving high availability in the cloud is Amazon’s Availability Zones.  They allow a company to run multiple instances of its critical applications in different data centers so that the applications can survive even a data-center failure.

The Availability Digest offers one day and multi-day seminars on High Availability: Concepts and Practices. Seminars are given both onsite and online and are tailored to an organization’s specific needs.  http://www.availabilitydigest.com/seminars.htm.

Published monthly, the Digest is free and lives at www.availabilitydigest.com.  Please visit our Continuous Availability Forum on LinkedIn.  We’re at 325 members and counting.  Our most recent thread is “What Have Been Your Experiences with Improper Failover Testing?”

Who Is Minding Your Logs?

I have always said that you can tell who the Nonstop Users are in the audience by the questions they ask, such as:

·        Is this product scalable?

·        What is the performance?

·        How do I monitor it?

The last question highlights the importance that NonStop system managers place on providing responsive support for their end users. That's why system performance monitoring tools like Prognosis, MOMI and others are very popular at Nonstop installations. On the other hand, monitoring logs on the NonStop doesn't get a lot of attention beyond the use of EMS or VHS.  Yet it is an important topic that is worth a closer look. How would you answer the questions below?

·        When do you look at your logs?

·        Do you know where your logs are?

·        Are you overloading your logs?

·        What is in your logs?

Learn more about these questions and the "Take-Away" on TIC Software's latest blog http://blog.ticsoftware.com/blog-0/bid/78097/Who-Is-Minding-Your-Logs

TANDsoft’s FileSync and Command Stream Replicator Highlighted in Availability Digest

Got a minute? A two-part article in the October and November (2011) issues of the Availability Digest (www.availabilitydigest.com) highlights TANDsoft’s Filesync and Command Stream Replicator (CSR) products. “FileSync and CSR Synchronize NonStop Systems” discusses the products’ strengths for relieving operations staff from having to continually monitor and correct backup software versions.

Also visit www.tandsoft.com for “FileSync and Command Stream Replicator: They Replicate Everything that Other Replicators Don’t!” This slide series was presented during TANDsoft’s vendor track at CTUG’s conference in October.

FileSync, TANDsoft’s file synchronization and replication product, automatically monitors, replicates and synchronizes source files, program environments, application environments, configuration files, programs – anything non-database that needs to be kept current across the network. Use FileSync for disaster recovery, system migrations, upgrades, and backups. Version 2.1 supports the synchronization of SQL/MX catalogues, schemas, and tables. In addition, Version 2.1 supports the SQL/MX filter.

CSR automatically replicates FUP, SQL/MP and SQL/MX DDL structure and other environment changes to target systems – changes and settings that normally are not replicated because they sit outside the TMF Audit Trail. Version 1.4 adds support for synchronous or asynchronous replication of HP utility (FUP, SQLCI, MXCI, SCF, TACL, SAFECOM, PATHCOM, others) operations on the backup system.

TANDsoft products require minimal or no application modifications and are available for all HP NonStop servers.

TANDsoft’s “best of breed, best in price” philosophy offers highly competitive value for all TANDsoft solutions. In addition to FileSync and Command Stream Replicator, they include the OPTA2000 virtual clock and time-zone simulator; AutoLib, which automatically loads a user library or a DLL for executing processes; and the Enscribe-2-SQL and TMF-Audit Toolkits, which reduce the pressures of modernization by offering flexible, affordable alternatives to more expensive conversion products or manual conversion techniques. The Enscribe-2-SQL Toolkit supports both SQL/MP and SQL/MX and permits file-by-file incremental migration. The TMF-Audit Toolkit easily converts non-audited TMF files to audited TMF files. Its embedded Tookit Trace captures and analyzes Enscribe activity to construct TMF transaction boundaries for custom applications.

For more information about TANDsoft’s product suite, contact Jack Di Giacomo at +1 (514) 695-2234.

The company is headquartered in Beaconsfield, Quebec, Canada. UTC/GMT -5 (Eastern Standard Time) www.tandsoft.com. Our Enscribe to SQL Migration Forum on LinkedIn is at 81 members and counting.

XYPRO Product Spotlight: Access PRO

Software for experienced security analysts and auditors

XYGATE Access PRO software addresses fundamental HP NonStop security requirements and eliminates the problematic issues most likely to concern experienced security analysts or auditors. Access PRO extends native capabilities into the area of actions, where security is based on what a user does, rather than on the individual file reads and writes being executed.

With Access PRO passing your audits becomes a routine experience, freeing up resources to focus other critical operations that affect profitability. Access PRO’s Access Control, Process Control, $CMON and Spoolcom/Peruse functions provide the core of a well-secured HP NonStop system. With these modules in use, you will have:

·        Individual accountability, restricting each user to a list of authorized actions based on that user's job functions

·        Comprehensive auditing, as detailed as you need it to be

·        Controlled $CMON processes, that administer logon to logoff session controls and load-balances your system

·        Convenient single spooler and peruse utilities, with advanced security and archiving functions. Users are granted the access and privileges required to do their jobs, and no more

PANfinder for NonStop V2.0 released

Cardholder data (CHD) discovery is an essential and ongoing part of any PCI-DSS compliance project. With the latest release of PANfinder, the only CHD discovery tool for HP NonStop is now even better.
PANfinder V2.0 features several enhancements to further improve accuracy and add new features.

A new Syslog output allows companies to feed search results to SEIM (security information and event management) servers.

To further increase scan speeds, PANfinder V2.0 can be configured to only scan files which have been edited since PANfinder's previous scan - why spend time scanning a file which hasn't changed since it was last interrogated? It can also be set to only search files which have previously been identified as containing PAN data - very useful for checking for successful removal of readable CHD.

And with new enhancements to PANfinder's PAN (Primary Account Number) and mag-stripe data recognition, results are now even more accurate, meaning false positive are reduced to the bare minimum.

Is Tandem In Your Future Part IV?

Or The Sun Rises In the East

by Carol Flaig

Prior to this month’s peek into my Tandem crystal ball, I’d like to send a special shout out to you hot bad ass Tandem NonStop hunks for your awesome love letters, WHEW (flutter)!  I hardly got any hate mail this month. Your photos and stats are indeed welcome. I especially enjoy examples of your personal COBOL code (please, keep the TAL to yourself).

Now, back to the crystal clear topic at hand.

There are those of you ardent fans who refuse to allow the former rock star, Tandem NonStop, to retire. You insist he has more than another Final World Tour left in him. He will rise again and prove to be as awesome as he was in his glory days. He will find a whole new crop of zealous groupies, hanging on His every transaction.

To you, I’d like to dedicate a little tale. It’s called The Sun Rises in the East. This story has particular meaning today as the west struggles with sovereign debt and regulation, while China revels in mounting surpluses and plays by its own rules.

The Sun Rises In the East

Once Upon a Time (August 2011), in a land far far away (China), the happy sun (a metaphor) rises. He is excited because he is going to an air show. Today, he will see his future and it is good. He becomes wealthy beyond his wildest dreams and controls the destiny of the world! THE END

The Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China (COMAC) unveiled the model of its C919 “Big Plane”; August, 2011, in Beijing, China. The jet will be available commercially in 2016 (that’s 5 years from now, folks). The manufacturer already has a customer and orders (China Airlines) . Go COMAC! Way to capitalize on the local market, perhaps you could compete worldwide?

COMAC says the twin-engine narrow-body design of the C919 is superior to the plane it will compete against: the (American) Boeing 737, the best-selling, most profitable jet in the world. The Big Plane will use up to 15% less fuel, offer reduced carbon emissions, and will be delivered at a lower price than the Boeing (and its current competitor the Airbus 320).  COMAC, you should compete worldwide!

Now, for the independent rules bit.

China manipulates its currency to keep it low. This results in artificially expensive American imports to China, and artificially cheap Chinese imports to the United States (and other countries).  China is a non-market economy (NME). The WTO (World Trade Organization) has no jurisdiction over NMEs.  The Chinese government provides subsidies to business it deems strategic thereby giving them an artificial edge. The Chinese government implements barriers to foreign investment. China has a reputation for IP disdain and ignores associated homegrown piracy.

Of course, real life is not quite this simple but, basically, this strategy allowed China to knock off the entire US steel industry and most of its manufacturing. It would appear China might have similar Big Plane strategic plans.  Go COMAC, you will lead the industry worldwide!

What does this have to do with Tandem? Stay with me folks, I’m almost there!

The future of the data center is a consolidated virtual 3rd party IT service leased to customers in chunks over the internet. This process is already winding up with big applications like email. Disaster recovery is performed remotely. Why not support entire data centers this way? Consolidate systems & applications, servers and network infrastructure, share management resources (tools & people), and save piles of money, right? This strategy is right out of the IBM, Oracle, and HP playbooks. I didn’t make it up, folks.

Do you see a Tandem (anything proprietary) in this picture? I don’t.

China’s 2011 five-year plan identifies 7 industries as strategic and promises heavy government investment to support them.  While Beijing does not offer specifics, standard government subsidies include preferred financing, tax breaks, electric and other utility breaks, and free or subsidized land. China wants to expand these industries to 20% of its GDP by 2020.  One of the 7 select industries is Information Technology. Is that a COMAC Big Plane I hear overhead?  You connect the dots.

Connect NonStop Conference Cruise

Connect is planning a NonStop Conference Cruise and Partner Roundhouse on the week of November 10, 2012 out of South Florida. To plan this, we would like your feedback as soon as possible so we can begin planning this very special event for Connect NonStop members. Based on the cruise fee and their conference support package, Connect is able to extend the savings to attendees and partners with lower fees than previous events.

There will be 2-days of 'deep-dive' technical sessions and 1-day of partner sessions including a partner roundhouse and reception during the 3 days at sea.

The cruise is meant to have the "look and feel” of a typical Itug show (on the "TUG-Boat”) as there will not be a San Jose event next fall.

Please share your thoughts/opinions!

French NonStop Users Meeting

Hello NonStop community members,

After the different contacts we had during the year and/or at HP Discover 2001 in Las Vegas, I am very glad to confirm the meeting for NonStop French speaking customers to be held in France on december 12th, just a few days after BITUG event in London.

This meeting will be held at HP France office in Les Ulis, 1 Avenue du Canada, close to Paris. (25 km south-west). I will send you logistics info later but this event should be free of charge.

To let me define the agenda, I would like you to know if you are interested in attending and presenting your company/products/services.

This will be one day event (approx 9 to 6) with slots for partner, customers and HP to present their product/solutions/references and small booth type spot for everyone to discuss with customers and partners. Depending of first responses from partners and customers I will refine the agenda, but as last year the main subject should be modernizing applications and success stories.

I sent invitations to 20+ customer companies from France and french speaking countries around. Last year at this same type of event I did organize, there was a total of 50 attendees representing seven customer companies + ten partners companies.

I hope you will be able to attend and if you plan to do so, please let me know.

Let me know also if you agree to provide prize and I should organize a passport for prize.

Best regards

Yves Tournier
