NTI News and Views...

Growing, Growing, Growing

In 2010, we partnered with FIS for distribution in Australasia, and with comForte for distribution worldwide. Both of these new channels give NTI a greater worldwide reach. DRNet interest is on the rise with quite a few proof of concept projects in the works. Fortunately for us, Pat Nee joined NTI to head Business Operations. Pat’s extensive experience and talents are helping us manage our growth.

We are enjoying substantial growth across our customer base. Quite a few Tandem Users either implemented new DR projects or switched to DRNet from a competitor’s product during Q1.  Our existing customers are migrating to blades platforms and expanding their usage of DRNet.

The long awaited Release 5.0 has gone into beta. More details about the new features over the next month or two.

2011 also brings a decision to increase our investment in the European market. Steve Schiller joined NTI to lead the Europe expansion. Steve’s 25+ years of international NonStop sales experience will help us organize and focus our efforts in this large market.

In 2011, we are also increasing our investment in Customer Account Management. We’ve added experienced DR staff to our team. These folks have a very broad customer-focused mission. They work with our Customer’s technical staff to understand issues, keep track of our customer’s business missions, solve business problems, and provide follow-up reporting as high as the CEO.

We continue to be big supporters of the Regional User Groups. We think that when we get the members together it builds friendships, strengthens the organizations, and fosters new ideas. We have been providing financial support for the RUGs, enabling them to host fun events for their members. We went to a Texas Rangers game last fall with the Dallas group. We hosted a spring baseball game in Phoenix for DUST. We hosted a Tampa Bay hockey game for SUNTUG, and then took them all out for a day of deep sea fishing. We are always looking for RUGs that would like sponsorship.

We did not have a vendor presence at Vegas Discover, as we didn’t see a lot of interest from the NonStop community. We felt our investment was better focused on our RUG program. Even though we did not register as a vendor, we had great DRNet exposure with our friends at comForte. They were very busy presenting DRNet. Gary Stanton (NTI Sales) attended to assist and to entertain our customers. Gary took a group from Mexico to see the Beatles show.

Lastly, about two years ago we produced our “Tandem Forever” shirts to give away at shows. They’ve been a big hit. If you would like one, email us at Sales@Network-Tech.com and we will mail one to you.

Choose your Security Partner Wisely.  HP Did

Over the last three decades, XYPRO has been a leader in the HP NonStop environment, providing powerful and sophisticated solutions to monitor and secure our clients' mission-critical systems.  In recent months, we have reinforced our commitment and dedication to this market by establishing a formal and long-term partnership with HP.  Since late 2010, HP has included XYGATE Merged Audit ™  on all new HP NonStop servers.

XYGATE Merged Audit allows you to aggregate and monitor the security audit of your mission-critical systems and the applications running on them.  XYGATE Merged Audit collects, filters, normalizes, and merges audit data from a variety of sources across your entire HP NonStop network, including Safeguard, EMS, BASE24, XYGATE security modules and others.   You can produce NonStop-specific reports based on audit data from one or all of the servers in your NonStop network, create real-time alerts for specific events, and send that consolidated NonStop audit to any off-box central audit logging devices or SIEM (Security Information and Event Manager), like ArcSight and enVision from RSA,  reinforcing the seamless  integration of NonStop server participation in any Enterprise Security mandate.

Now that you have XYGATE Merged Audit, what’s next?

XYPRO offers a packaged XYGATE Merged Audit Installation, Configuration and Education Service.  Contact your local XYPRO representative to learn more.

First Step to Migration: Web-Enabling

For the converged infrastructure-themed issue of The Connection (May/June 2011), NuWave Technologies contributed an article on Web-enabling applications to prepare for a zero-downtime migration to CI. Since many NonStop users are still a little confused about what converged infrastructure is and how it could benefit their organizations, we also included a more unbiased description of CI and the options available.

NuWave has been assisting corporations with migrations for many years. Using their SOAP/AM Server product, companies can easily expose NonStop applications as Web services, allowing a migration to take place while applications are still running. We call this a zero-downtime migration, and believe that it should really be the only option for migrating critical NonStop applications.

While the article only mentions SOAP/AM® briefly, the readers who have tested the solution against its alternatives are fully aware of the benefits of using this product. But, just to make the comparison clear to those who haven't evaluated SOAP/AM Server, we snuck in a list of what to look for in a NonStop SOA solution. Take a look:

1.     Does it run in Guardian or OSS?

2.     Does it have security included in the price?

3.     Is it standards-based? Does it support HTTP/HTTPS, XML, and SOAP?

4.     Does it convert IPMs to WSDLs?

5.     Does it have Web-based management tools? If not, what does the interface look like?

6.     Does it include a wizard? If not, how easy is it to use and what is the learning curve?

7.     Does it require changes to existing software?

8.     What is the nature of the product support? Are there user testimonials, stories, and recommendations available?

9.     Is there a free trial available? If so, is it for the full version of the product?

Check out the article (called "Can SOA Facilitate Your Move to a Converged Infrastructure?"), and don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about migrating to the BladeSystem Matrix or any other platform.

Insider Technologies – Providing NonStop Code Development, Legacy Support & Bespoke Solutions

Since 1989, Insider Technologies have been successfully designing, developing and maintaining application software for HP NonStop platforms. From the early days of the CLX/VLX systems, through the K & S-Series (ServerNet) and onto the latest Integrity and Blade platforms, Insider’s products have continued to evolve, which means of course, that our development team have also evolved their programming and development expertise.

During the advancement of our product set, Insider’s development team have utilised their skills in areas such as the conversion of legacy code to Native objects (code 700 / 800), conversion to more common, portable languages such as C / C++ and OSS (Open System Services) while in parallel, enabling applications to run as HighPin processes.

Insider’s core HP NonStop development team embodies a skillset across a wide range of HP NonStop software, such as: TAL, pTAL, C, C++, COBOL85, SCOBOL, CRE, SQL, Enscribe, TACL, TMF, OSS, Java, Guardian Procedure Calls, Measure, WebSphere MQ, TCP/IP, SPIs, EMS, Pathway and Programmatic API calls to BASE24 XPNET.

Gravic, Inc. Honored with HP AllianceONE Partner of the Year Award for

Converged Infrastructure Solutions at HP Discover 2011 (Las Vegas)

The HP AllianceONE program team announced at HP Discover 2011, Las Vegas, that Gravic, Inc. was selected for the 2011 AllianceONE Partner of the Year Award in the category of: Innovative Award Winner: Converged Infrastructure Solutions. The HP AllianceONE Partner of the Year Awards are presented to an exclusive set of HP alliance partners in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in the development and delivery of innovative solutions that achieve standard-setting levels for business excellence and client satisfaction. HP states, “The superb quality of the award entries and the challenge in selecting the winners serve to highlight the commitment Gravic has made to our mutual goal of delivering innovative, high-quality solutions that drive meaningful business results for our shared customers. We congratulate the Gravic team for their excellent achievement.”

The Gravic team was very impressed by the attendance and venue at HP Discover 2011. There were many informative HP NonStop presentations and a reasonable number of HP NonStop customers. The excitement was high for “Cloud Computing” and it seems as if HP has positioned the NonStop server as a vital component of that architecture. Other major topics were the continuing discussion of various success stories in the Converged Infrastructure area as well as much interest in the HP NonStop Blades products with many recent migrations to it.

The team delivered two educational sessions at the show, one targeted to the HP Japan/customers and another to a general session. Both were based on high and continuous availability NonStop-based business continuity architectures, with the first being more C-class executive level and the second focusing on the technical details. If you or your team are interested in hearing either presentation, please contact us and we’ll arrange for a presentation to meet your needs.

Once again, there was considerable interest in Shadowbase Zero Downtime Migrations (ZDM) technology, as many of the upcoming NonStop conversions (e.g., upgrading to SQL/MX 3.0, a migration to a Blades architecture) will require full application or system outages. If eliminating planned downtime is important to you (i.e., RTO=0), please contact us for a free white paper on this approach. We congratulate John Nash of SHAZAM for winning the Amazon Kindle prize from our drawing at the show.

Gravic Awarded Four New U.S. Patents

Paul J. Holenstein, Dr. Bruce Holenstein and others of Gravic, Inc. were awarded four new U.S. Patents:

·        No. 7,962,458 entitled: “Method for Replicating Explicit Locks in a Data Replication Engine” on June 14, 2011.

Availability Digest Simplifies Failover Analysis

Although they are a predominant factor in availability calculations, failover times are seldom taken into consideration.  The Availability Digest’s June issue demonstrates how fast, reasonably reliable failovers can have a dramatic impact on a system’s downtime and availability.  The takeaway?  Failovers do count.

Also in this month’s Digest - a review of the cost of downtime plus a “Never Again” peek at Verizon’s 4G network failure.

Digest Managing Editor Dr. Bill Highleyman presented two availability sessions at HP Discover 2011.  Plans are to post the presentations on HP’s Discover 2011 website.  In the meantime, feel free to email billh@availabilitydigest.com to request your own copies of “So You Think Your Data Center is Safe” and “Does Data Replication Eliminate Backups.”

Published monthly, the Digest is free and lives at www.availabilitydigest.com.  Please visit our Continuous Availability Forum on LinkedIn.  We’re at 267 members and counting.  Our newest thread is “How Many 9s Are Good Enough?”

TANDsoft’s “Application Jet Lag – Consolidating Global Data Services” Appears in Connect Converge

TANDsoft’s “Application Jet Lag – Consolidating Global Data Services,” will appear this month in Connect Converge, the user group’s new digital quarterly publication. “Application Jet Lag” addresses the challenge that companies face as they attempt to consolidate applications running in different time zones into a single processing environment.  The article introduces a brief history of time zones, discusses solution options, presents case studies, and highlights time-simulation products supporting a variety of HP platforms.

One of those products is OPTA2000™, TANDsoft’s virtual clock and time-zone simulator. OPTA2000 allows multiple applications operating in a consolidated environment to each have its own virtual system clock or function in its own virtual time zone with date/time specifications that are different than that of the system clock.

Using intercept technology that has been a speciality of TANDsoft’s for almost two decades, OPTA2000’s intercept libraries provide virtual system times arbitrarily offset from current time.  For time-zone simulation, the libraries create virtual times offset from a system’s actual time by an amount expressed as a deviation from GMT time (Greenwich Mean Time).  For clock simulation, the virtual times can be offset to whatever time is required for the testing, maintenance, etc., of an application.  No application modifications are required, and a single server can host thousands of applications.

TANDsoft’s “best of breed, best in price” philosophy offers highly competitive value for all TANDsoft solutions. In addition to OPTA2000, they include the Enscribe-2-SQL Toolkit, the TMF-Audit Toolkit, FileSync for automatic file synchronization and replication, and Command Stream Replicator, which automatically replicates DDL structure and other environment changes to target systems – changes and settings that normally are not replicated because they sit outside the TMF Audit Trail. TANDsoft products require minimal or no application modifications and are available for all HP NonStop servers.

Our new Enscribe to SQL Migration Forum on LinkedIn has 59 members and counting.  Here is an opportunity to discuss with peers both migration success stories and the challenges faced by those who make the migration effort.

Musings on NonStop!

June, ‘11

The opinions expressed here are solely
those of the now self-employed author

Following the introduction of the new format for these articles, I will jump straight to the subject matter in hand. And it has much to do with revisiting the past. My past! It only occurred to me as I made notes for this article of how my early days working with data base products and then with manageability offerings, would be revisited as intensely as they have been of late.

That’s not to say I am spending any less time in networking and communications, as I will have more to say on this subject later in this article but rather, given that my clients are active in monitoring of systems, middleware and solutions, as well as with data base implementations, it’s been fun to step back into technologies I have only been following sparingly for the past couple of years.

Monitoring?

There’s a new group that’s started on LinkedIn that I plan to support. And it does fit in nicely with my support for all things Real Time. Check out the group:

realtime.ir

Discussions on this group will feature NonStop and will focus on solutions provided today by Integrated Research (IR) for which I will be providing content on a regular basis. And if you haven’t caught up with their new web publication at:

http://realtime.ir.com/

You may want to check it out as there’s my first feature on manageability in general and on how it fits with the CI-Ready program specifically. As a contributor I plan to pepper this publication with my usually slant on technology and products and as always, welcome all questions and comments you may have. Again, check it out and the companion LinkedIn group as well.

Data Base?

Manageability discussions take me back to the time I spent working as a Program Manager within the Tandem Computers development organization, Distributed Systems Management (DSM). However, looking even deeper into my past, the early years were spent working with data base management systems.

I mention this as in the next few days I will launch a white paper on the usage of NS SQL/MX following three months of customer and partner interviews as well as timely input from HP NED product managers. During the process of writing this marketplace white paper, I become even more impressed with what companies are doing today with NS SQL/MX and with the plans they are hatching for the future! Watch for this paper - it will be posted to HP’s web site and as I know more then I will address in next month’s article.

Networking and communication?

Finally, after many months of being prodded and poked in a number of Proof of Concepts (PoCs) the uLinga product from Infrasoft uLinga, has landed its first customer. The ink has dried on the agreement following a lot of effort on the part of the distributor, comForte, and I will be developing further stories on this that will appear shortly in features and articles. Watch the comForte web site where the news release will first appear.

uLinga is all about modernization of traditional networking and should be considered by all and needs to kept in mind given the single-purpose nature of HP’s CLIM product line. It’s a TCP/IP world so stay tuned.

On this note, I will wrap up this article with the observation of how the role of NonStop is once again evolving. Networking is modernizing; the data base is becoming a more robust and compatible solution; monitoring it all along with adjacent components is helping the business! Until next month…

ETI Announces Expanded Encryption Choices at

HP DISCOVER 2011

At HP DISCOVER ETI-NET announced new features for its BackBox virtual tape product family

that enable all HP NonStop system models to utilize a variety of enterprise key managers in

encrypting virtual and physical tapes.

Many customers are under pressure from regulatory bodies to encrypt their data to prevent its

exposure. But unless FIPS-certified enterprise-quality key management is used there is a risk of

key exposure or even data loss if the keys not are retrievable. The new BackBox capabilities

permit integration of all NonStop systems into customer’s chosen enterprise key management

infrastructure.

Further, today’s customer disaster recovery approaches require transmission and storage of

backup volumes in insecure environments, such as shared IP links and cloud storage.

Implementation of support for enterprise key management permits utilization of cost-effective,

insecure media, while ensuring the reliability and availability of restores on mission critical

systems and safeguarding the keys that limit access to the data.

In early 2011 ETI-NET released the “Volume Level Encryption Option for BackBox”, permitting

encryption of virtual tapes by HP NonStop customers with systems supporting HP’s VLE product.

This took advantage of the FIPS 140-2-certified HP Enterprise Secure Key Manager (ESKM) to

manage the encryption keys, ensuring their secure handling as well as availability when needed

to restore from encrypted virtual tape backups. All of this is handled totally transparently from

NonStop applications and does not impose any NonStop processing load.

However, until now this solution was only available for a limited range of recent NonStop system

models due to HP’s requirement for VLE implementation in storage CLIMs. With the new

BackBox capabilities, any S-, NS- or NonStop Blade system can have BackBox encrypt virtual

tapes, with the same HP ESKM used for key management.

Further, the new BackBox encryption capabilities permit the use of enterprise key managers other

than the HP ESKM. By implementation of the KMIP standard from OASIS, BackBox can utilize

any key manager supporting that standard.

395-2278 or by email at information@etinet.com.
