How to Easily Modernize and
Expose Valuable Enscribe Data by Eliminating Data Silos
Gravic published the article,
Easily Modernize and Expose Valuable Enscribe Data – Eliminate Data
Silos in the
July/August edition of The Connection. This article/case study
explains how a large European manufacturer runs its online shop floor
operations on an HPE NonStop Server and uses HPE Shadowbase data
replication to exploit the currency and value of this online, trapped,
and siloed data. Data replication is not only used for providing backups
for business continuity, but also for moving isolated data in real-time
in order to leverage its value for competitive advantage and building
new business solutions. Data replication’s potential includes:
integrating disparate applications, eliminating data silos, and
distributing data quickly where it is needed and can easily be consumed
by other applications.
A second case study reviews
a customer utilized “off-platform” data integration,
where Shadowbase software transformed and replicated the trapped and
siloed source data (HPE NonStop Enscribe) into the desired target data
structure (SQL), and applied it into a remote (off-platform) target
platform and database (Linux/Oracle) for analytical processing and
reporting. In both cases, Shadowbase software successfully replaced a
popular remote-access Enscribe product that was at end-of-service-life (EOSL)
with minimal disruption to the customers’ overall design, while adding
considerable new capabilities to the overall implementations.

The Benefits of Switching from Scale-up to Scale-out Architectures
Gravic just published the
The Benefits of Switching from Scale-up to Scale-out Architectures.
Keeping up with user demand and managing a service outage or brownout
is a significant challenge for IT departments. The traditional
scale-up approach suffers from significant limitations and cost issues
that prevent it from satisfying the ever-increasing workloads of a 24×7
online society. The use of massively parallel processing and scale-out
architectures is the solution, since they can readily and
non-disruptively apply additional compute resources to meet any demand,
at a much lower cost, and with improved service availability. The use of
the HPE Shadowbase data replication engine to share and maintain
consistent data between multiple systems enables scale-out application
and workload distributions across multiple compute nodes, which provides
the necessary scalability and availability to meet the highest levels of
user demand now and into the future.

TSI’s Purpose Built Backup Appliance, Storage Director:
This Webinar focuses on the
use of Storage Director as a gateway to IBM Storage, particularly Flash.
But remember, that’s on the backend of Storage Director, all NonStop
servers are supported on SD’s front end. What this means of course, is
that IBM Storage is fully functional with HPE NonStop. In fact, Storage
Director is the industry leading software defined, policy-based and
tiered enterprise backup virtualization solution that enables data from
any host, OS or backup application, to be backed up to any storage
device, medium or technology. For Hybrid Multi-Cloud-based backup,
Storage Director interfaces with IBM’s Cloud Object Storage, Hitachi’s
HCP, or any S3 compatible cloud.
So check out the Webinar,

MultiBatch: Tradition meets Modernisation
We know that for almost four decades, the HPE NonStop architecture has
been the ideal choice when high level availability and reliability are
MultiBatch, conceived in 1985, has gone hand in hand with HPE NonStop
providing workload automation on NonStop for over 30 years. It is in
many ways a mature product that is used by a loyal customer base. Our
customers have relied on the code stability and a measured and
controlled approach to change.
But how can we bring MultiBatch to prominence in the new NonStop X world
where the unique design that still provides the very highest
availability levels is being introduced to a new generation of users?
I started work for Insider Technologies in October 2019 and was soon
posing this question to myself. Many discussions and brainstorming
sessions later the future direction became clear.
Firstly, I needed to make sure I added value quickly. As the dedicated
Product Owner for MultiBatch these were my initial goals:
Become an expert in the product, understand the architecture so I was
confident in making change.
Ensure we have quality processes for turning around fixes quickly and
Introduce modern development practices, especially automated regression
Make sure MultiBatch evolves to meet new customer needs.
The first three are just a matter of time, after all Insider
Technologies are a quality oriented company and I have over 25 years’
experience as an HPE NonStop Architect and Designer. We are already
able to react more quickly to customer need and make the enhancements
they require more efficiently.
For the fourth I needed a little more thought. I understood Insider
Technologies are a small agile company that is only able to be a
significant player in relatively small markets where it may not be cost
effective for larger companies to operate. Knowing this made me sure
the investment of time and effort to evolve MultiBatch would be
worthwhile, it will always be a niche product and it is my job to make
it the most significant player in its market.
What underpins this evolution is creating an exciting vision to which
our customers can contribute and buy into. This is our roadmap, we now
look a year ahead and a have wish list that can be prioritised and
planned. We have gone from ‘release when ready’ to ‘plan, estimate and
release to agreed schedule’.
Critically, we have introduced metrics and estimation, this is itself an
evolving process where we become ever more accurate, using constant
feedback to refine the metrics.
The road map is updated on a three monthly basis, it is all too easy to
get lost in the detail of delivery and not take account of the bigger
picture. By reviewing regularly, we are able to refine our direction
and ensure efforts are best utilised. We may have limited resources but
being focused allows us to deliver on our priorities.
Of course our customers are the most important stakeholders. They
should know for their own planning purposes when changes are to be
delivered. We need to get to a point where are customers are active
contributors and challenge what we do.
know what is ahead even when there is a turn in the road!
Matt Duncan on
So what’s currently in our road map?
We have two threads, improving the base functionality and modernisation.
For the base functionality there a number of customer specific requests
that have been estimated and scheduled for delivery. Additionally, I
realised that our OSS offering required some improvement. We have
completely reviewed MultiBatch OSS functionality and have detailed plans
for many improvements.
The NonStop OSS software stack now provides a modern open environment
with security, system management, middleware, Java/Java-frameworks, an
open development environment and, of course, a scalable fault-tolerant
MultiBatch will become the obvious and maybe the only choice when a
customer is looking for workload automation seamlessly across both
Guardian and OSS.
As a younger generation comes to NonStop they will expect to find the
familiar, HPE themselves recognise this and are updating OSS to make
sure it remains at the forefront of open standards. As older
applications running on Guardian are updated they can make use of OSS as
their gateway to open modern architectures.
where the latest works in unison with the tried and trusted!
Todd MacDonald on
MultiBatch has a decoupled architecture where discrete functionality has
been separately added to complement what is already there, the new is
added without comprising the integrity of earlier development. This
approach can be contrasted with the monolithic systems some have
developed, where a change can have unforeseen effects in some distant
part of the system. MultiBatch has the advantage of being easy to
understand from a development viewpoint, the learning curve is reduced
because each part is not too large and can be learnt independently.
My approach to modernisation will be consistent with what has gone
before. We will look at discrete functionality that complements what we
already have. There are many ideas on our wish list, but first we are
looking to provide a new browser based HTML5 interface to be offered in
addition to the current SCOBOL interface.
Already we have undergone a Proof of Concept. There were many products
to evaluate and we have now chosen one, a technical design has been
written and we have an estimate for delivery based on the PoC output.
The product and how we use it will be the subject of another article,
you may be surprised by what you read.
Using HTML5 in a browser will allow us to provide a more dynamic
interface. We will start by providing the existing SCOBOL functionality
and will then add automatic API driven screens to show for, for example,
your running processes and their statuses.
Of course the interface will be improved using the richness of HTML5,
for example we will make use of grids, tree lists and best practice
For the future we will be looking at open products to unlock the
historical data we are starting to record, this will take the form of
graphs, reports, alerts, dashboards and visualisations.

Webinar: 5 Best Practices for HPE NonStop File Integrity
File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) is a foundational
requirement for security compliance frameworks to help identify
unexpected or malicious activity across critical system files,
diagnose unwanted or inadvertent changes, and shut down attacks
before they have a chance to cause damage and disruption.
Organizations that collect and process credit card transactions and
payments data must comply with the
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard
(PCI DSS) requirements 10.5.5 and 11.5 that state organizations must
make efforts to monitor file modifications and ensure the integrity of
critical logs from within their Cardholder Data Environment (CDE).
On HPE NonStop servers,
XYGATE SecurityOne (XS1)
monitors and alerts when key files, objects, or system configurations
are viewed, deleted, modified or ownership has changed. XS1 identifies
who made the change and if the change put the system at risk or violated
This intelligent form of
real-time integrity monitoring
simplifies monitoring activity and helps meet the strictest of
compliance requirements while reducing noise generated by unnecessary
alerts. Your resources are focused on the most critical security events.

The Europeans try
once more to help us pay
News emerged this last month of the europeans banks once again trying to
expand consumer choice and give consumers another option for payment at
the point of sale. It’s not like we europeans are short of options;
across the broad continent, products like Klarna enable the “buy-now
pay-later” model at the moment of online purchase without the hassle of
signing up. Similarly ApplePay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay and other
mobile wallets are also options at the POS and ePOS. The new initiative
I mention is currently known as the European Payments Initiative (EPI).
Some 16 banks have joined together with a plan to offer a Direct Debit
payment mechanism at the POS. The model is not that different from the
iDeal payment product as offered to dutch consumers today, except that
EPI aims to be a cross-border version of the same. The bigger question
is who benefits and why go to all the trouble? Surely people can pay
cross-border already with their debit cards, in Euros. Euros are euros,
right? Well yes, however, the great attraction for merchants to these
scheme is that the banks can start to control this payment scheme. It
will not pass via any of the existing card networks, such as Visa or
MasterCard. So fees and rules will be managed by the association of
banks themselves. Merchants too will benefit from this as they will be
afforded greater protection from chargebacks and friendly fraud. You
might also consider this as the banks starting to nibble away at the
card schemes. Although it appears to be more of a defensive measure and
a wish to control the large bill of fees that are due to the schemes for
issuing of card products and the acquiring of card transactions.
e-commerce will also embrace this new payment product, as it will
continue to evolve and include new payment methods. As an aside, even my
local dentist offered me the opportunity to pay e-commerce style as I
stood there with card in hand. I can foresee the day when we no longer
distinguish between face to face commerce in a shop and online
e-commerce. They will become one.
OmniPayments helps payments institutions who need to integrate their

Compliance Issues with File Integrity Monitoring?
How One Financial Institution Solved Theirs with CSP
File Integrity Monitoring is an important requirement of the PCI
data security standard for maintaining confidential (e.g.,
cardholder) information, and is considered a crucial part of
protecting business assets.
NonStop systems are now being used in far more dynamic situations
and have more external connections than ever before. The ubiquity of
payment cards for personal electronic transactions has changed the
security equation in a fundamental way.
Any compromise in security is likely to have far reaching
consequences, both in terms of financial loss, and for the wider
damage to an organization’s reputation. Protecting personal
cardholder information is paramount.
In this context, File Integrity Monitoring should be considered an
important security necessity, not just for PCI compliance, but in
order to preserve the integrity of all NonStop systems.
Toronto Based Firm Receives Compliance Requirement
CSP recently received a request by a large,
Toronto based, financial institution regarding File Integrity
Monitoring. The client wished to improve their file monitoring
process and had also received new compliance requirements regarding
their file monitoring abilities. Specifically, they were having
issues enabling file monitoring for a payment application.
It was crucial for them to know which changes had been made to
critical files and to also have the ability to flag any unauthorized
changes, compare file sets on different systems, report on changes
to file attributes, and generate regular reports for managers and
auditors. File monitoring was also required on an ongoing basis.
After evaluating their requirements,
a solution specifically designed for monitoring changes to files and
generating compliance reports.

“The largest security risks to
any organization are the misuse or compromise of privileged

risk as they enable elevated access to your organization’s
“Because of the fear of
‘breaking something’ that could impact the ATM, POS, Mobile, or Payments
infrastructure, many applications and systems were initially deployed,
years ago, with passwords for privileged accounts that were and still
are rarely rotated, shared, and improperly stored,” said Tcherchian.
“This practice should be keeping CIOs and CISOs up at night, especially
since there is something they can do about it.”
The compromise of privileged
accounts is connected to nearly all targeted attacks. Proper credential
storage and management are paramount for responsible risk mitigation. If
you are still manually managing privileged access, you’re not doing all
you can to protect your systems. It’s not news that anything manual is
resource-intensive, error-prone, and leaves gaps in your security.
A Privileged Access Management

activities. In this webinar, XYPRO and CyberArk discuss how the HPE
NonStop server integration helps with visibility, traceability,

Fighting Fraud with the Latest Technologies TANGO
The need for a cutting-edge,
real-time fraud solution has never been so critical as it is now. The
world has seen an unprecedented switch from CP (cardholder present), CNP
(cardholder not present) to online transactions, which has massively
changed the patterns of fraudulent activity for OLTP (online transaction
processing). Organizations that process online payments need the agility
to rapidly counteract this industry swing. Lusis Payments is in the
perfect position to help you achieve this.
The Changing Retail Banking Landscape Across the retail banking sector,
every acquiring and issuing payments environment must have the dexterity
to manage all of these activities while meeting strict compliance
guidelines, managing data and IT cybersecurity, and more.
Ultra-intelligent and safe financial fraud and payments systems are a
prerequisite for any modern economy. They enable everyday transactions,
thus providing the foundation for commerce and trade.
Over time, all payments ecosystems globally have developed
inefficiencies and lost some of their ability to innovate and adapt to
the changing needs of end-users. The platforms tend to be old, outdated
systems that have inefficiently evolved together over time. And
fraudsters love this — it's “easy pickings” for them.
The Solution: Tango AIF™ by Lusis
By deploying Lusis AI Fraud powered by Tango (Tango AIF™) you
will get the leading-edge solution for fraud monitoring, detection and
action — technology that provides the latest methods for processing
secure transactions, irrespective of source, nature or market segment.
Tighter payments regulations; evolving platforms, and new initiatives,
such as PSD2, GDPR and 3DS2.0, etc., require advanced fraud technology.
That is why implementing a solution like Tango AIF to enrich detection
to combat fraud is critical. As service providers, retail banking
organizations need to maintain control over these issues while upholding
compliance and protecting revenues.
