Availability Digest’s Guest Author Damian Ward Discusses Capacity Planning at VocaLink

Damian Ward knows capacity planning. In his role as a NonStop Solutions Architect at VocaLink, the provider of the Faster Payments Service (FPS) and LINK Scheme (LS) service to UK banks, Damian works in-depth on VocaLink considerations regarding system overload, capacity margins, and capacity limits.  In “Avoiding Capacity Exhaustion,” Damian describes a technique based on past statistics and future projections of system traffic. The result is an amazingly simple graphic showing daily “hot spots” predicted for the coming year and forecasts the probability that a CPU failure  during a particular hot spot will cause an overload condition.  Damian explains how this analysis was recently used to select an LS service upgrade strategy from several options.  Damian is the chairman of BITUG, the British Isles Tandem User Group.

Also in this month’s Digest:

Royal Bank of Scotland Offline for Two Weeks - it took two weeks after a failed software upgrade before operations returned to normal at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS).  The bank did have a backout plan in place; but in this case, it didn’t work.  What did work was the bank’s flexible customer-service model that allowed it to rapidly expand office hours and call-center capacity to handle the demands of frustrated customers.

Ring-of-Fire Bank Beats Earthquakes with Active/Active a bank’s rational credit policies allowed it to survive the recent subprime crisis.  But the bank didn’t fare so well when it lost its data center for several hours due to an earthquake.  In response, the bank decided to migrate  data-center operations to a continuously available active/active environment.

SEPA forces IT to change the payment related applications

What is SEPA?

The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) stands for the European Union (EU) payments integration initiative. The SEPA vision was set out by EU governments in the Lisbon Agenda, March 200, which aims to make Europe more dynamic and competitive.

Deadline for establishing technical and business requirements for credit transfers and direct debits is the 1 February 2014.

The SEPA rules provide for the general use the IBAN instead of the previous Bank Code and Account Number. Supporting IBAN creates a lot of changes in payment related applications.

ITP-PANORAMA was developed for exactly this type of task.

Analyses of the impact of changes to SEPA without ITP technology will take weeks or month of developer time. With ITP-PANORAMA some 85-95% of analysis time can be saved. Because analysis requires 40% of project time to implement the required changes, a third of cost and time can be saved. Results of analysis with ITP-PANORAMA are 100% correct and reliable errors are avoided in the first place which cuts also the time to test the applications. Their elimination is then time- and cost intensive.

What software changes require the introduction of SEPA?

All programs that are using the Bank Code and Account Number.

A unique with ITP-PANORAMA is the capability of following the value chain through complex applications. Localizing the relevant variables is not good enough, following the business process step by step is necessary to understand how the business process is supported.

A click on an entity that was selected or searched for displays in less than a second all usages across all applications. You can search for field names, name parts, field lengths, etc. Graphics show call hierarchies of programs, modules, within programs as sections or structure graphs in a flow chart type representation. Searches can be stored as macros and recalled.

ITP provides for the migration to SEPA also a temporary license and expert ad-vice. You will see very quickly that extending your software for the support of SEPA can be done much faster than previously planned and carried out at much lower cost.

comForte launches Protection of Data-at-Rest Suite of Products

comForte is pleased to announce the launch of its latest suite of security solutions - SecurData for the protection of your data-at-rest. Protection of data-at-rest is a key area in security mandates like the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). comForte's suite of products - SecurData/Tokenization and SecurData/Audit - enables organizations to take appropriate steps to comply with PCI-DSS.

PCI-DSS requirement 3.4 demands the Primary Account Number (PAN) to be rendered unreadable anywhere it is stored. Lacking a suitable solution for payment systems on HP NonStop, PCI auditors accepted compensating controls as a temporary measure. SecurData/Tokenization now enables a fully compliant implementation of PCI-DSS 3.4 for the major payment applications, transparently and with no changes to the application!

PCI-DSS requirement 10 asks for all access to network resources and cardholder data to be tracked and monitored. SecurData/Audit provides transparent logging of access to any sensitive data. It adds application-level auditing to existing applications, again, without requiring any application changes!

Read more about SecurData at www.comforte.com/securdata<http://www.comforte.com/securdata>

Strong Authentication. The Device Is The Key™

NetAuthority irrefutably identifies and authenticates connected devices.

In today’s world of mobility, cloud computing, virtual workforces, social networks, and online businesses, stronger authentication for identity and access management is more critical than ever. Security vulnerabilities are skyrocketing and malicious attacks are being unleashed in unprecedented numbers with increasing sophistication, resulting in massive information and economic losses.

Identity and Access Management has historically focused on the attributes of a person’s identity. User ID and passwords are still often the only form of authentication used by organizations.   Traditional forms of multi-factor authentication are not designed to address the explosive growth in internet-connected devices and online activity and are unable to meet the needs of scalability, ease of use, affordability, and mass-deployment that the online-connected world requires.

Today’s organizations are faced with the following challenges:

•             Knowing the devices that are connected to applications and networks without owning them

•             Knowing that the devices accessing the network are actually in the hands of authorized users

•             Implementing access authentication solutions that are secure, cost-effective, easy-to-use, and highly scalable

•             Implementing access authentication solutions that provide flexibility and multi-dimensional security that complements existing systems and infrastructure

•             Ensuring that regulatory compliance requirements and security best practices are addressed

NetAuthority’s Device Authentication Services addresses these issues and more through:

•             Irrefutable identification of the device via its Dynamic Device Key and links the user with the identified device, for strong authentication security.

•             Notifications and alerts providing organizations with immediate visibility to unauthorized users attempting to gain access, unauthorized devices, and more.  Organizations are now empowered to quarantine or even blacklist devices for greater security.

•             Flexible, mass-deployable, user transparent, and cost-effective strong authentication solution, unlike other “something I have” authentication methods.

•             Secure service API to interface with existing user management systems, monitoring systems, and log management solutions to leverage prior investment

•             SaaS-based service, so strong authentication can easily be implemented based on an organization’s assessment of risk and information assets.

•             Satisfying regulatory and best practices requirements for strong authentication and compliance.

NetAuthority’s Device Authentication Service provides strong authentication security with unprecedented control and visibility to both the Who and What is accessing online applications, accounts and information.

CommitWork is announcing its new product OmnivoRSC

The official launch of OmnivoRSC will be in August 2012. It will perfectly match with CommitWorks portfolio of OmnivoBase, OmnivoBridge  and CDS (CommitWork Developer Suite).

This new product provides communication capabilities via a very “light” gateway with your legacy servers residing on NonStop systems. OmnivoRSC also allows managing transactions remotely from clients or from other systems. This new feature enables several consecutive calls of legacy services within a single transaction. This kind of a transactional feature was often requested in the past. In addition, automatic transaction control can be performed by OmnivoRSC, if a transaction state field is specified in the message header.

The client part of OmnivoRSC can be used within a rich client environment or also within remote systems, which are in many cases not HP NonStop systems. For example, this could be a JEE application server, or SAP, or any other system.

OmnivoRSC version 1.0 will provide support for Java application environments; the next version will also support Microsoft's .NET systems. First tests with C# clients could be performed successfully.

PANfinder(tm) - Powerful PAN Data Discovery Tool, distributed by comForte

PANfinder(tm) is a sophisticated yet inexpensive software tool which scans systems for unmasked and non-encrypted payment card data or PANs (Primary Account Numbers). Whether organizations are at the start of a PCI-DSS compliance project

or are already certified, PANfinder will help to research the PCI-DSS scope and to meet PCIDSS requirements 3.2, 3.4, and 6.3.4.

PANfinder(tm) provides a method of scanning systems for readable/unprotected primary

account data (PAN) data. Once found, organizations can take steps to secure or remove that data. When there are no unsecured PANs residing on the system, PANfinder helps to prove all PANs are being stored in accordance with PCIDSS.

By building up a history of clean PANfinder reports, users are well placed to provide auditors with proof of historic compliance. The new release 2.3 of PANfinder supports SQL/MP and PAK files.

Musings on NonStop!

July, ‘12

The opinions expressed here are solely
those of the now self-employed author

Summer is in full swing and with the late evenings here in Colorado I have been able to spend afternoons at the track laying down some good laps, as our local road course has become my home track. It’s often a misconception that home tracks offer few advantages when it comes time to take to the track with others – there’s no substitute for natural talent – but knowing every subtle change in surface condition and road camber is very important. If home tracks advantage is sometimes discounted, perhaps more intriguing is how difficult it is to change perceptions of particular automobiles.

My car of choice on road courses is a ten year old Corvette and after passing a BMW the driver told me of how he expected me to pass him on the straights and how he was sure his car would hold its own in the corners. After passing him in a corner sequence his only response was that “American muscle cars don’t handle and you surprised me!” A few weeks ago, while participating in a Jaguar-sponsored afternoon of driving their cars when I was asked what cars I drove my English instructor responded with “so you only like muscle cars!”

But misconceptions and false perceptions aren’t solely reserved for cars. When it comes to technology and IT, there are plenty of examples. And changing a community’s perception of systems can prove as difficult as changing perceptions about cars. In a recent conversation with HP’s NonStop product managers reference was made to how there was reluctance now to talk about the modernization of NonStop, as this only added to the perception that NonStop, needing to be so modernized, was today anything but modern. Perhaps legacy.

This conversation led to me writing the June 9, 2012, post to Real Time View “Surprised? NonStop made it big at HP Discover!”, and
of how the references to modern in messages supporting NonStop had all but disappeared. And for a good reason! I even suggested in that post that promoting a “Modern NonStop” might simply be a poor example of tautology. Yes, perceptions are often reinforced in very subtle ways.

Part of what drives me to blog the way I do, and to as many sites as I am now supporting, is that I want to make it very clear that NonStop (as an architecture, a technology and a product line) is as relevant today as it was almost forty years ago when it was first introduced into the marketplace. If you discount IBM’s OS/360 operating system (and its subsequent revisions) there are few other examples of architectures witch remaining as relevant as these two.

And for very good reasons, even with the arrival of servers and with their propensity for being deployed in clusters, nothing works as well as NonStop when it comes to supporting today’s mission-critical applications. Purely and simply, nothing has appeared since NonStop to make it obsolete. Or, as I heard it less-subtly stated recently, NonStop has simply avoided being “Wang-ed”!

So it should now come as no surprise that I have been accepted as a guest blogger on Attunity’s blog site, In Tune Blog. The first two posts are part of a five part series on the topic of “
Improving HP NonStop Data Movement: On Premise And In The Cloud” and features excerpts from a recent opinions paper with the same title that I wrote about the product Attunity Replicate. This paper can be found at: http://bit.ly/HuGfuI #BI

Casting the net as far and as wide as possible, and telling the story of NonStop to as many IT professionals as I can reach is the main reason why I enjoy the blogging aspect of my business life and am looking forward to this opportunity to post on the Attunity site. I am extremely thankful to Attunity for giving me this opportunity. It will mean spending a lot more time in front of the keyboard, but it will not change the passion I have for participating in symposiums, events, kick-offs and any opportunity that arises to spend time with the NonStop community.

Recently, Angus MacKenzie, the Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend was appointed Chief Content Officer to Motor Trend’s parent company. In his final column to Motor Trend he revealed how he wasn’t going “to spend all day, every day driving a desk, so I’ll also be an editor-at-large for Motor Trend, writing and blogging on the passion that has consumed my life for as long as I can remember and taken me around the world for three decades.”

Yes, perceptions may take time to develop and prove hard to shake, but they can be influenced to the contrary and ultimately dismantled. And it is usually with examples – first person observations of something extraordinary and hearing and reading about our peers deriving business benefits in ways we hadn’t even considered.

Having the opportunity to blog to an even larger audience, as has been extended to me, courtesy of Attunity, gives me the opportunity to build on topics that are both topical and current and I trust that you will routinely check their web site and look for what I have to say.

NonStop is very much as important to business as it has ever been, and its retention in support of some of the most visible mission-critical customer-facing applications on the planet is a strong testament to its continuing relevance. Perhaps it is easier to change the perceptions with this acknowledgement than it is for some car manufacturers, but it will take many more positive stories being told!

NonStop Customer Use of Time Zone Virtualization is “Light Years Ahead” of IBM z/OS Customers

It’s official. NonStop customers are “light-years ahead” of their IBM z/OS counterparts in recognizing the value of date/time simulation testing and time-zone virtualization. That’s the conclusion reached by an IBM provider of date/time simulation and time-zone simulation solutions to the z/OS user base. In a recent interview conducted by the Availability Digest for its “Critical Date Testing – Leap Day and More” article (May 2012 issue), the partner acknowledged the challenge of convincing z/OS users to consolidate systems via virtual time zones or to “QA the date and time logic of their code.” Not so in the NonStop environment, where TANDsoft’s OPTA2000 is valued by customers worldwide for its use in situations where time-sensitivity becomes an issue in application environments. OPTA2000 is the only product of its kind available to the NonStop community.

OPTA2000 is a virtual clock and time-zone simulator that uses intercept technology to allow multiple applications operating in a consolidated environment to each have its own virtual system clock or to function in its own virtual time zone with date/time specifications that are different than that of the system clock. For time-zone simulation, the libraries create virtual times that are offset from a system’s actual time by an amount expressed as a deviation from GMT time (Greenwich Mean Time). For clock simulation, the virtual times can be offset to whatever time is required for the testing, maintenance, etc., of an application. No application modifications are required, and a single system can host thousands of applications.

OPTA2000 supports all applications (user, HP, and third-party, including BASE24) on the HP BladeSystem as well as on NonStop S-Series and Itanium servers.

TANDsoft’s “best of breed, best in price” philosophy offers highly competitive value for all TANDsoft solutions. In addition to OPTA2000, they include: FileSync for automatic file synchronization and replication; Command Stream Replicator, which automatically replicates TMF-audited/unaudited FUP, SQL/MP and SQL/MX DDL structure and other environment changes to target systems; and the Enscribe-2-SQL and TMF-Audit Toolkits, which offer flexible, affordable alternatives to more expensive conversion products or manual conversion techniques. The Enscribe-2-SQL Toolkit supports both SQL/MP and SQL/MX and permits file-by-file or program-by-program incremental migration. The TMF-Audit Toolkit easily converts non-audited TMF files to audited TMF files.

TANDsoft products require no application source-code modifications and are available for all HP NonStop servers. Free trials are available.

Contact TANDsoft’s Jack Di Giacomo at +1 (514) 695-2234 for more information. Please visit us at Table #21 in the Partner Pavilion at the NonStop Advanced Technical Boot Camp, October 14-16 in San Jose, California, USA. Ban Bottlenecks: Proactive Capacity Planning

System management in today's complex world is challenging. With thousands of systems and multiple tiers of systems handling critical applications, management by real-time screens is the norm. But in some cases it's not good enough.

For those financial systems handling thousands of dollars a second, more proactive management is required.  Reacting to an event may be too late.  It's mandatory to develop detailed understanding how a transaction traverses tiers of computers, how it uses those tiers, where there may be potential problems within the tiers, and when those problems will affect the transaction flow. A minute's downtime can cost tens of thousands of dollars or more.

No-sweat capacity management: For over 20 years our Ban Bottlenecks service has helped clients discover where the potential problems hide within their financial systems.  We are extremely successful in saving our clients money by anticipating disruptive bottlenecks or operational problems.

Ban Bottlenecks gives you:

o     Experienced and focused performance professionals who advise and guide with a monthly report and conference

o     Free software which collects and reports on all applicable performance-capacity-utilization statistics 7x24x365

   o     Application data integration

   o     Daily on-system reports

   o     Weekly peak/problem reports

o     The hand-crafted monthly Ban Bottlenecks report which is a forward-looking evaluation of your systems, integrating a 24-month perspective covering your application traffic, performance, and utilization

o     The monthly Ban Bottlenecks conference for an active dialogue between your business, your technical teams, and our performance experts
