Seasons Greetings and a Prosperous New Year from BrightStrand International

BrightStrand International would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. We would also like to thank all of our customers for their business and continued support throughout the last year.

It was good to meet with old friends, and make new ones at the BITUG BIGSIG at Trinity House on 8th December. As ever there were a number of interesting presentations. The one given by Dr Bill Highleyman, the managing Editor of the Availability Digest was of particular interest. This presentation included a few horror stories of things that have happened to customers that resulted in the loss of their systems and service, and, on occasions, loss of the business itself.

Bill’s findings are confirmed by a recent survey of European financial sector companies for EMC (details at  http://www.finextra.com/news/fullstory.aspx?newsitemid=23196). A quarter saw their revenues hit and product development delayed due to data loss and system downtime last year.

Nearly two thirds of finance industry companies who took part said that they are “not very confident” that they cold fully recover systems or data if hit by a disaster.

Availability is something that is well known to NonStop users, as it is the main reason for choosing the NonStop platform in the first place. However, situations can arise such as natural disasters, man-made disasters or the inappropriate action of a member of the IT staff, sometimes through ineptitude, inexperience or lack of training that can impact the availability of NonStop systems.

Neil Fisher, vice chairman, Information Assurance Advisory Council, says “It really doesn’t matter if the events are routine, acts of god or the result of criminal activity, Companies who plan for events and who invest in secure and speedy recovery will be the market winners”.

BrightStrand can help to mitigate these risks and keep your business on the right track with the following services:

-        Business Continuity Planning and Implementation

-        Risk Reviews

-        Training Needs Analysis and Training

-        Provision of Skilled and Experienced Consultants to help Internal Staff

-        Managed Services

If you require further details on the above services, or any other that BrightStrand delivers please contact Dave Stewart today on +44 (0)7831 775115 or email him on dstewart@brightstrand.com for more information.

Preventing scans coming though the IP network

ListLib is a product from GreenHouse.

It prevents the Tandem system against a Denial of Service (DoS) attack coming through the IP network, by controlling the activities of LISTNER.

It is designed as a library, which has to be attached to the LISTNER product on the Tandem system. It intercepts the relevant procedure calls to:

***  get the IP address of the calling instance and

***  get the file name of the requested resource, e.g. ECHOSERV, FTPSERV etc.

The calling IP address is checked, and

***  has to be positively mentioned in a white list, and is not allowed to be in a black list.

A request from an IP address, which does not pass this check, is rejected right away.

It restricts the number of ECHO-servers to two per IP stack, and rejects any additional one.

It controls the number of FTPSERV processes by differentiating between logged on servers, and logged off servers.

Rejected actions can be reported to:

§  the EMS system, and a log file.

The product is available.

Please contact Info@GreenHouse.de

Musings on NonStop!

December, ‘11

The opinions expressed here are solely
those of the now self-employed author

It’s been quite a year. And I am not certain I can summarize it all in just the few paragraphs you will find here. However, there has been a couple of items that stand out for me and, in some respects, continues to demonstrate that a healthy and robust NonStop community remains a force in the marketplace.

Top of any list I would pull together about what transpired this year would be the continuing interest in user group events (and no, I have no intention of rattling off a top 10, or devoting paragraphs to arbitrarily assembled anecdotes). This year I enjoyed participating in both, the South African and Indian events, and as far from home as they were the fellowship with so many like-minded folks was a revelation.

Yes, the interest in all things related to the HP NonStop Server remains high with no single question garnishing more exchanges than those looking for information about new customers and new applications – NonStop continues to find opportunities. Perhaps not on the scale of a decade or so ago, but nonetheless there’s interest out there and attending user events, no matter where in the world they are held, continues to help reinforce my appreciation for just how many companies rely on the HP NonStop Server for mission critical applications.

Talking of user events – already 2012 looks like being a bumper year. Dates have already appeared for the next event in South Africa, as has dates for the combination GTUG / pan-European event in Dresden, Germany. Many eyebrows were raised over the possibility of holding a user event on a cruise ship, but for the moment I am not holding my breath on this one eventuating.

Certainly, coming from the Connect committee it is demonstrating thinking that is definitely outside the box, but with the economy as sluggish as it is these days I suspect very few companies will warm to the idea of sending their employees on a trip into the Caribbean! However, what I am hoping eventuates is events in the US – perhaps one on the east coast followed by one out west – along the lines of GTUG, or even what CTUG have been able to pull off, take on more substance.

HP Discover will always represent the big-tent event for HP and its customers, and I hear work is already under way to beef up the content for those from the NonStop community that will participate. However there is always opportunity to complement the HP Discover with multiple, smaller events wherever there are sizable communities, either in combination with a regional user event or even, should an event be scheduled close to HP in San Jose, as a standalone event. Either way, there’s plenty of scope here for creative individuals or even motivated vendors to step in and support.

My observations following what I have seen firsthand (as well as from what I have read in a number of discussion groups) is that there is a lot of interest in participating in such events. The NonStop community deserves opportunities to get together to hear what HP has planned and to listen to what others are doing, and I for one will continue to lobby and work towards seeing more events eventuate.

Returning to my list it would be impossible to ignore the many changes that have occurred across HP – who could have imagined we would see more than one CEO for the year! While I was a little unsure of how Meg Whitman would warm to the task and wondering out loud, on more than one occasion, whether Whitman was simply filling-in while HP set about finding a replacement, the combination of Whitman and Ray Lane seems to be doing a reasonable job.

At least the flow of headlines coming from Palo Alto has abated somewhat with the reversal of the decision to exit the PC business (well, at least, engaging a partner) creating many sighs of relief up and down the peninsula!

HP is by no means out of the woods yet and it’s clear it has a real fight on its hands with Oracle simply beating up on HP and its high-end Unix offerings, but the recent news to add support of x86 chips to its mission critical product offerings, and with it brings capabilities, once solely the domain of HP’s HP-UX to both Linux and Windows, may staunch some of the leakage that’s been apparent. While I am still staring at the tea-leaves over the announcement, I hope to be able to provide more commentary in the New Year as I get a better view of the complete program that today is being called Odyssey!

Finally, looking at the announcements that came from the NonStop development organization it was pleasing to see the appearance of SQL/MX 3.0 and 3.1 – if you haven’t seen the support it is getting, check out the LinkedIn group NonStop SQL Professionals, and in particular the discussions started by Frans Jongma and Scott Randall. SQL/MX will continue to play a significant role in ensuring a future for NonStop and everyone associated with the NonStop community should be taking steps to leverage the product.

I was fortunate to have been recruited to write an opinions paper for HP on the subject of NS SQL/MX and from the interviews and email exchanges that went with the assignment I became more impressed with what HP NonStop has today in NS SQL/MX – when it comes to larger deployments, there’s simply no better product offering. For me it seems remarkable that Oracle’s Larry Ellison has only recently realized that an integrated HW / SW stack has advantages, something that’s hard to miss with all the advertising he’s done!

There’s much that I will be following in 2012, of course, and I look forward to producing further posts, commentaries and opinions. Enjoy the festivities of the season and I will see you next year …

The Availability Digest Introduces Malware as a Service (MaaS) as the Latest Offshoot from the Cloud

The Cloud has now spawned a new type of service.  Malware as a Service (MaaS) significantly increases cybercriminals’ abilities to launch automated attacks. The result is a shift in the demographics of information-asset attacks from large corporations to smaller companies.   Guest author Andrew Price of XYPRO® Technology Corporation

(www.xypro.com) reviews the 2011 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR), recently published by Verizon, to understand better how Malware as a Service is succeeding in making small companies such attractive targets for hackers.

The December Digest also includes Help! My Data Center is Down! Part 3:  Internet Outages.  As increasing numbers of companies rely on the public Internet to connect their users to company data centers, the reliability of their communications networks has been called into question.  After all, the Internet is not a guaranteed service.  It’s a best-efforts service.  How is availability compromised when a company minimizes its control over its communication network?  The Digest explores notable Internet failures that rendered useless otherwise fully operational data centers.

The Availability Digest offers one day and multi-day seminars on High Availability: Concepts and Practices. Seminars are given both onsite and online and are tailored to an organization’s specific needs.  http://www.availabilitydigest.com/seminars.htm.

Published monthly, the Digest is free and lives at www.availabilitydigest.com.  Please visit our Continuous Availability Forum on LinkedIn.  We’re at 336 members and counting.

Marshall Resources – helping customers reduce the cost of NonStop Hardware Maintenance and extend S Series Support

I have spoken with several NonStop customers over the past few months who have asked me the same question about parts availability for the S Series.  There seems to be some confusion about how Marshall Resources acquires and maintains parts and how HP’s end of production will affect S Series availability.  Our exclusive source of Tandem hardware is from the End User who has decommissioned systems.  We are not tied in any way to HP’s manufacturing, and in fact, have always acquired more parts than what could be consumed by a shrinking number of customers on that platform.  I have been asked by many of you how long we could guarantee S Series parts availability.  The reality is that there is no end date for how long we could provide storage, testing, and availability of quality parts.  The demand for these services is the only factor that determines how long we offer these products.  In fact, we no longer have demand for TNSII and TXP parts, but we do have some for our own sentimental reasons.  Please allow me to explain further about Marshall Resources, and at the same time I will try and provide some helpful information as it relates to the general condition of the NonStop maintenance industry.

Yes indeed, Marshall Resources does maintain the world’s largest inventory of second hand Tandem / HP NonStop Computer hardware.  We have our primary refurbishing, repair, and testing facility in North Carolina, USA.  We also have a facility in Frankfurt, Germany with a large stock of parts and test systems.  We also have storage locations in France, England, and Singapore.  The purpose of these remote facilities is to support our global hardware maintenance business.

Besides a large number of systems in the US, we also have NonStop systems under support in several UK locations, much of Europe, several Eastern European locations, and South East Asia.  We have hired many experienced Tandem engineers to cover these locations, and we have also established several key service provider relationships throughout the world.  All of this enables us to be truly global in our service offering.

Another factor that has helped our service offerings is the availability of retired Tandem CEs.  We provide a wonderful opportunity for experienced Tandem people to continue using their skills, part time, at a very attractive hourly pay rate.  About 90% of our current Field Service Team has an average of 25 years Tandem experience.  With recent hires, we can also boast that about 50% of our team has Integrity and NS-Blade training..  Please call us if you are interesting in employment, or please refer us to any of your Tandem friends who have been ’retired’ by HP.

Currently, the demand for S-Series maintenance is very high.  In 2012, HP is approaching end of life on many S Series components.  Even with some parts and CPUs extending EOL through 2013, all S-Series Users will have systems with some or a lot of components out of HP support sometime next year.   Many customers are not in a position to upgrade these systems to Integrity systems or Blades, so interest in third party support is very high at this time.  Marshall Resources continues to increase its resources and as it does so, this adds to our economies of scale and therefore response times improve and allow for better pricing and levels of service.  This interest in third party solutions has also helped us with an increase in inquiries for NS-Integrity service, which we are also able to offer.  We have already helped many customers make considerable savings in the NonStop hardware maintenance area.  We would be delighted to work with you to demonstrate what saving we can make for you.

At Marshall Resources, we strive to provide the highest quality service with the highest quality equipment.  Our repeat customers are our greatest compliment.  Please visit our website at www.marshallresources.com for our company information, and find a sales representative in your area to assist you.  We can always be reached at +1 800-443-0128, or by e-mail cm@marshallresources.com .  We are looking forward to working with you.

You could be meeting PCI-DSS AUDIT regulations right now! XYGATE Merged Audit may already be on your HP NonStop server.

Since September of 2010, XYGATE Merged Audit™ (XMA) software is shipped with every new NonStop server.  If you ordered your hardware in the last 14 months, chances are that you’ve got XMA!   https://www.xypro.com/xypro/products/audit_pro

That means you may already be able to meet all of PCI Requirement 10 without any compensating controls!  All you need to do is turn it on and start logging all of your NonStop security activity.

If you would like to speak with someone at XYPRO about getting XYGATE Merged Audit up and running in your environment, please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with the XYPRO representative in your area.

Why wait?  You can be meeting PCI regulations right now! Contact us at XMAINFO@xypro.com

Platypus 6530 Java terminal emulator FIRE SALE!

Provide Tandem 6530 cloud connectivity and reduce cost with Platypus Partners 6530 java terminal emulator, JET 6530.  JET 6530 annual license fee, ALF, half price fire sale is good through January.

JET is a full featured java browser based terminal emulator supporting hundreds of thousands of users worldwide. Some of them are the governments of US, Australia, Spain, BNP Paribas, Boeing, Carrefour Lockheed Martin, Fidelity, HSBC, Los Angeles Dept. of Water, and DHL.

JET does not include a security component. Use your own security product or consider using our world class security partner, App Gate’s Mindterm server. The USDA supports 5,000 concurrent JET users with the Mindterm SSH secure server.

"JET 6530 allowed Karstadt to move Tandem NonStop 6530 access to the cloud for half the cost of any other emulator”, says Steffen Koenig of Karstadt, headquartered in Germany. “We support all internal and external users’ 6530 access in Europe and South America with JET 6530. We made a very good economical choice moving to Platypus JET 6530.”

Platypus Partners realize testing and implementation of a new emulator requires unplanned time so we have priced JET 6530 to make it worth your effort. Your budget is shrinking.  What could be easier? Reduce your ongoing costs and strategically position your Tandem for decommission with internet access.  Replace your existing emulator with an upgrade to cloud connectivity for half the price of your current emulator annual license fee, ALF.  JET customers have replaced their existing emulator in a matter of weeks.

That’s right, there’s no upfront JET initial license fee, no ILF.  Simply pay half what you currently pay for 6530 emulator annual maintenance, ALF.  JET comes in 6530 and 3270 flavors. Special pricing applies to JET 3270 as well.  Save even more money, replace your current 6530 and 3270 emulators with JET cloud access now.  Kick the tires with a 30 day free trial. You’ve got nothing to lose but your high emulator ALF fees.  Your budget will thank you.

Connect NonStop Conference Cruise

Connect is planning a NonStop Conference Cruise and Partner Roundhouse on the week of November 10, 2012 out of South Florida. To plan this, we would like your feedback as soon as possible so we can begin planning this very special event for Connect NonStop members. Based on the cruise fee and their conference support package, Connect is able to extend the savings to attendees and partners with lower fees than previous events.

There will be 2-days of 'deep-dive' technical sessions and 1-day of partner sessions including a partner roundhouse and reception during the 3 days at sea.

The cruise is meant to have the "look and feel” of a typical Itug show (on the "TUG-Boat”) as there will not be a San Jose event next fall.

Please share your thoughts/opinions!
