Identify and Protect Your Sensitive Data with TANDsoft’s Sensitive Data Intercept (SDI)

We all agree that it’s critical to protect your sensitive Enscribe, SQL/MP, or SQL/MX data-at-rest, but it’s equally as important to identify who exactly has access to the data. That is an often overlooked consideration, one where the value of TANDsoft Inc.’s Sensitive Data Intercept (SDI) really shines.

SDI is best known as an application that intercepts HPE NonStop database access calls, then works with HPE, third-party, and in-house security solutions to protect sensitive data by encrypting / tokenizing data written to disk and decrypting / de-tokenizing data read from disk. TANDsoft’s years of expertise in interception technology makes it all happen without the need for any application modifications, of particular importance when the source code is unavailable.

Not all SDI customers require everything that SDI has to offer. Instead they rely on SDI only for auditing/logging purposes. SDI intercepts all of a customer’s database access calls and logs that access. Customers can see who or what is accessing sensitive data, the times of access, and what specific data is being accessed. In this case, no sensitive data is being encrypted or decrypted. Only database interception is taking place. Without an application like SDI, auditing/logging is often manual, labor-intensive, and particularly challenging when companies must work with auditors for the purpose of regulatory compliance.

SDI as an audit/logging solution can be purchased directly from TANDsoft. SDI combined with HPE SecureData identifies and protects your NonStop database. SDI also is embedded into the solutions of comForte and XYPRO, two major HPE NonStop security partners.

Currently, SDI is in production with several NonStop customers.

SDI Features and Benefits

• Supports NonStop Enscribe, SQL/MP and SQ/MX
• No application modifications required
• Available on all HPE NonStop servers
• Supports NonStop Guardian and OSS, both native and non-native applications
• Offers additional encryption and tokenization capabilities when combined with HPE SecureData or NonStop security partner products
• Helps organizations comply with PCI-DSS, IPAA, SOX, and other industry regulations

In addition to SDI, TANDsoft solutions include FileSync for automatic file synchronization, replication, and data deduplication; the OPTA2000 virtual clock- and time-zone simulator; the OPTA suite of interception and trace utilities (OPTA-Trace Online Process Tracer and Analyzer, Recycle Bin, Low Pin Optimizer, and EMS Alerts Online Startup and Termination Capture Utility); Stack Monitor, which alerts developers to the impending threat of a stack overflow; Command Stream Replicator, which logs and automatically replicates TMF-audited/unaudited FUP, SQL/MP and SQL/MX DDL structure and other environment changes to target systems; AutoLib, which automatically loads a user library or a DLL for executing processes; the Enscribe-2-SQL and TMF-Audit Toolkits and the Enscribe-2-SQL Data Replicator, all of which offer flexible, affordable alternatives to more expensive conversion products or manual conversion techniques; and E2S-Lite, which permits efficient, low-cost Enscribe modifications without the need to change a program’s source code.

Visit TANDsoft at the upcoming Canadian Tandem Users Group (CTUG) event on 11 October in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. TANDsoft also will exhibit in the Partner Pavilion at the NonStop Technical Boot Camp, 13-15 November, Burlingame, California USA. We’re Booth #41.

For information about TANDsoft solutions, contact Jack Di Giacomo at +1 (514) 695-2234. Free trials are available. www.tandsoft.com. TANDsoft is an HPE Silver Partner.

The Next Generation picks up the Baton

A little over 30 years ago Michael Nee had an idea which led to the creation of the concept of data replication. DR was new. Not only for the Tandem, but for many other hardware lines as well. This idea was born in the early days of online transaction processing (OLTP). The concept for DRNet came at a time when businesses began to realize the true cost of even a second of downtime, and began to plan for “mirror” datacenters, separated by great distances.

NTI has been around for over 30 years. Yes, there continue to be small unique innovations, but the basic invention is still the key to OLTP reliability today. Over the past 3 decades there have been so many amazing technical breakthroughs that we take them as commonplace. Sometimes you have to take a step back to see a new trend emerging. What I see is a new crop of brilliant folks who are entering this space and taking over from the “old guys”. Consider Gabrielle from NuWave who can show you how to link your old Tandem application seamlessly into your new enterprise systems, or Michelle and her team at NTI who run our support organization and do amazing things under extreme pressure. Talented women taking over from the old guys.

About a year ago Kate Nee, Mike’s daughter, joined the NTI team and started working with me in Business Development. She recently wrote the following reflection.

I have been working at NTI for almost a year now. However, the world of Tandem isn’t anything new to me. My father has been in the industry for decades. Growing up my siblings and I used to sneak into the server room and play (yep, my homes have always had computer rooms). Well that was until we got caught and never tried that again.

When joining the professional world, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Sure, I had internships in high school and college but full-time employment was new to me. I spent years of my life in “school mode” and knowing what to do and how to do it. This was a big change for me.

I grew up in a mostly female household. In college, I was in a sorority with 75 other women. So, it was an odd feeling to walk into a meeting or even a big event like BootCamp with hundreds of people, being one of the few women in the room.  Some people were very nice and welcoming, while others treated me like a complete outsider. It’s hard being the new kid on the block when everyone has known each other for longer than you’ve been alive.

I have learned a lot from some really amazing people.  I’m surrounded everyday by people who are extremely talented in what they do.  In the coming years, I’ll continue to learn from people who probably have forgotten more than I could ever learn.

Kate (Kate.Nee@Network-Tech.com)

And, because I like to tie these stories back to our technology, NTI recently announced our EVOLUTION program. EVOLUTION enables the seamless transition from Oracle GoldenGate to DRNet with zero transaction loss and zero downtime. The transition from the old to the new. Give Kate a shout and she can send you some materials on this next generation technology.

PCI-DSS 3.2 – The Art of Compliance on the HPE Integrity NonStop Server

PCI-DSS 3.2 is only months away. I thought now would be as good of a time as any to revisit the article below highlighting the upcoming changes.

The two most impactful changes to NonStop customers will be Multi-factor authentication (MFA) now required for all non-console administrative access to the card data environment as well as discontinuing usage of pre TLS 1.1 protocols. MFA becomes a requirement in February 2018 and TLS 1.1+ becomes mandatory in June 2018.

In the next issue of The Connection Magazine, we will go in depth with how to address PCI-DSS 3.2 on the HPE NonStop, but in the meantime, the article below summarizes the changes that NonStop users should be aware of.

DataExpress continues to make news …

“As a development company whose products provide value to almost every NonStop user worldwide, we recognized that finding a partner with global reach that has a global sales force would also be important. After all, taking our message to every major NonStop user is probably the most important undertaking for companies like DataExpress. Obviously, the step before support is actual sales. Across the NonStop community there are only a few companies that can meet these requirements and after a lengthy search we are happy to have found in comForte Inc. such a partner.”

The above comes from the latest post to the DataExpress NEWS/BLOG and to read the complete story, just follow this link to the post,
THE CHANGING PARTNERSHIP LANDSCAPE – DATAEXPRESS EXPANDS ITS REACH!

There is real value for NonStop users to know that their favorite vendor can also lend a hand when it comes to products in areas adjacent to their primary field of expertise. In this case, comForte is well known for their expertise in security and when it came to securing network communications it was only natural for DataExpress to turn to comForte for a solution. Today, whenever a DataExpress customer moves files over SSH it requires comForte SecureFTP/SSH and as for using TLS, it requires comForte SecureFTP/SSL. It is from the experience we gained working with the comForte team for many years that led to further discussions taking place that produced the strong partnership now being covered in blog posts and commentaries.”

The above appeared in the August, 2017, issue of NonStop Insider and to read this article in its entirety, just follow this link to the article, DataExpress – transformation

Gravic Publishes Technical Article on

Achieving Scalability for Mission-Critical Systems in the Cloud

Gravic published a technical article, Achieving Scalability for Mission-Critical Systems in the Cloud in the July/August issue of The Connection. A major pillar of mission-critical systems is scalability, which is an inherent and important attribute of mission-critical systems, since both the servers and the database must be scalable. Applications often require additional capacity during critical times.

Active/active systems can provide scalability to servers as well as to the database. However, adding physical servers and disk systems to achieve greater capacity is typically not feasible, especially for temporary additional capacity needs. Scalability can be achieved via active-active systems and Pathway Domains, which span multiple HPE NonStop systems. It can also be achieved by bursting applications to RAIC servers (inexpensive commodity hardware) deployed in one or more clouds, where the servers can be reused between applications, providing an economic cloud platform for scalability-on-demand (in other words, leveraging the concept of “cloud bursting”). For NonStop users, maximizing the RAS for mission-critical systems can now be accomplished by leveraging the new Virtualized NonStop technology.

CSP has helped many NonStop users meet ever changing organisational and regulatory compliance over many years and now “the times they are a changing”, and CSP is once again here to help.

As of 25th May 2018 – the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be enforced.

This new Regulation is being introduced to address the modern digital world.  It is more extensive in scope than previous regulations and supersedes national data laws such as the UK’s Data Protection ACT of 1998.

The Regulation will require organisations to implement clear and strict policies and procedures to protect personal data.  The GDPR will have a stronger privacy/security standardisation effect than any technological effort has to date.  Ultimately, the GDPR aims to give individuals back control of their personal data, whilst imposing strict rules on those hosting and processing personal data

Just for the EU? No – The GDPR will be essential for all global organisations, wherever they are located.  The Regulation introduces rules relating to the free movement of personal data within and outside the EU.  Any company located anywhere that processes/manages data on EU residents will need to comply with the new Regulation.

Examples of GDPR mandates include:

-        In the event of security breaches reports must be produced within 72 hours

-        Regular supply chain reviews and audits will be required to ensure they are fit for purpose

-        Data protection impact assessments

-        And many more

And there’s another reason to really get GDPR ready…….  Huge fines for non-compliance

The new regulation mandates considerably tougher penalties than the DPA.  Those found in breach of the regulation can expect administrative fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20 million – whichever is greater.  The legal community is readying now for non-compliance battles.  Non-compliance sounds like an expensive option; both in terms of tangible £’s, $’s €’s but the damage to brand and company reputation as a result of non-compliance, is not so easy to quantify.

CSP has been in the NonStop security business for almost 30 years and what-ever the impact of GPDR to your organisation, CSP has the decades of experience, expertise, industry knowledge and the compliance and security data management software products to once again help NonStop users meet the challenges of complying to the new General Data Protection Regulation.

Availability Digest’s Dr. Bill Explains Why His Doctoral Thesis Was a Major Fail

During his tenure at Bell Laboratories in the early 1960s, Digest Managing Editor Dr. Bill Highleyman was assigned the task of building a system that could read handwritten numbers. At the time, long distance calls were recorded by an operator on a handwritten ticket and then transcribed manually onto punch cards for later processing by a billing program. It was a labor-intensive process, and Bill was asked to build a system that could undertake all of the above automatically.

Bill thought this was a great idea for a doctoral thesis, and it led to his 211-page dissertation on “Linear Decision Functions, With Application to Pattern Recognition.” Bill did earn his doctorate, but read his article in this month’s Availability Digest to learn why he thinks his efforts were a major fail.

In addition to “Dr. Bill’s Doctoral Thesis,” read the following articles in the Availability Digest’s August 2017 issue:

Dark DR – Avoid Its Costs With Active/Active – Traditional disaster recover (DR) methods utilize an active/passive architecture, one in which there are two redundant servers. One server actively processes the application, and the other server is a backup system. From an operations viewpoint, the server remains “dark” until it is needed. Hopefully, it will work. In contrast, the servers in an active/active system both process transactions. Neither is “dark.” No crossed fingers and prayer during an unplanned outage. Should one server fail, all transactions are routed to the surviving server.

Should Cyber Victims Be Fined? – The United Kingdom has taken what some consider to be drastic steps to fine “essential infrastructure operators” that suffer a cyberattack. Essential providers include those in the utilities, health, transport and communications sectors. The U.K.’s decision to fine these cyber victims stems in part to the £60 million cyberattack on TalkTalk in 2015. The threat of fines is the U.K.’s way to encourage companies to improve their cybercrime deterrents.

Marketo Goes Down, Revived by Customer – Marketo Inc. is a marketing tech giant that makes automation software, sold to companies that plan to promote themselves via multiple digital channels (email, social media, websites, etc.). On July 25, 2017, Marketo’s website suddenly went down. Its applications crashed. Marketo’s customers lost access to their content on the Marketo platform, scheduled promotional emails were sent with broken links, and customers had no way to interrupt their compromised online campaigns. What happened? It turned out that Marketo had forgotten to renew its domain name.

@availabilitydig – The Twitter Feed of Outages - Our article highlights some of our numerous tweets that were favorited and retweeted in recent days.

The Availability Digest offers one-day and multi-day seminars on High Availability: Concepts and Practices. Seminars are given both onsite and online and are tailored to an organization’s specific needs. Popular seminars are devoted to achieving fast failover, the impact of redundancy on availability, basic availability concepts, and eliminating planned downtime.

In addition, the Digest provides a variety of technical writing, consulting, marketing, and seminar services. For instance, many articles that you see in publications like The Connection were ghostwritten by us for individuals too busy to write themselves. We also create white papers, case studies, technical manuals and specifications, RFPs, presentation slides, web content, press releases, advertisements, and so on.

Consider us as well for the following:

• Patent Disclosures – Dr. Bill Highleyman is the holder of a dozen-plus patents and will be happy to help you with your applications.

• Book Writing – As the author of “Performance Analysis of Transaction Processing Systems” and a co-author of the three-part series “Breaking the Availability Barrier,” Dr. Bill understands the effort it takes to produce a manuscript. Buy the books on Amazon.

• Consulting – We specialize in system architectures and risk analyses that help our customers provide the appropriate uptime, performance, and data protection for individual applications.

Musings on NonStop!

August, 2017

The opinions expressed here are solely
those of the now self-employed author

G’day,

August is anniversary time. When it comes to the NonStop community blog, I have been writing posts for the blog for ten years now and with this week, start my eleventh year of blogging. Who would have guessed? And it all can be traced back to a simple request coming from the ITUG board during a Chicago board meeting I happened to drop in on as a past Chairman. The origins of the blog can be traced back to a regular column I wrote for The Connection by the same name, Real Time View. These days, of course, I have returned to writing another column for The Connection where you can find it on the back page under the heading of Back for more …

For more on what has transpired this month and that has appeared in posts to business and social blogs check out the links that follow here:
